I'm semi obsessing, debating, thinking..

Got side swiped....the damage was mainly rear fender flare and the left side of the bumper.
Wishful thinking PDR could address the slight belly and the *slight protrusion* due to impact of plastic........
PPF seems to have mitigated most paint damage. There might be a *spot* on point of impact....wont be able to tell until the PPF is peeled off.
Not peeling it off till I submit the claim and adjuster

My Bodyshop guy says just get a new cover and paint new skin
Before I went to the shop, I was thinking he would need to blend in ...the sides as the bumper makes up quite a but on the sides as well.

It just so happened he had a MachE on the trailer, and he told me to look at it. He replaced/painted the front clip, but the rear was not done (at least by him) but you could spot the mismatch in the sun

Granted, even cars from the factory, bumpers are sprayed seperately afaik....

So tell me fellow, AGO.s How golden is your eye on picking out mis-match in paint panels:bumpers....

I'm going to visit my other body shop to see how they suggest that would address the issue to get a consensus
Granted every bodyshop has their own paintbrush and how they would approach these things

I'm not sure they still spray the end caps separately the way they used to (at the factory), but that's speculation just based on the fact that plastics are different now, and when was the last time you saw uneven fade? Back in the single stage days? Certainly in the BC/CC days the plastic parts the clear would fail before the metal parts, but I think even that is less than it was.

(According to Dr. G at Optimum, who knows a thing about CC, he said that they found that the UV absorber in the clear was migrating through the basecoat/primer into the plastic and causing premature failure of the clear; they rectified this by putting UV absorber in the plastic, therefore there was no "pressure" causing the absorber to migrate)
 
I can’t really recall a time where I’ve noticed mismatched paint on a bumper, but then again even if it was slightly off I’d tend to kind of give it a pass since plastic bumpers tend to be different material from the rest of a vehicle and are somewhat expected to not be perfect. On some vehicles I don’t even like polishing them unless I absolutely need to.
 
It's so common I don't even notice anymore. I surely won't point it out to a customer (same with swirls. If they don't notice them why give them something else to worry about)
 
Many years ago I was at a body shop picking up one of my Commodores after having the hood re-sprayed, he had a sign on the wall telling all customers that any plastic bumper repairs will have a slight colour difference under different lighting conditions, and that is the nature of plastic paints. They will not be re-spraying any bumpers or wings because they appear slightly different.

And since then I noticed it all the time. Sometimes I see doors that have obviously been re-sprayed, no blending, just straight up different at the door edge.

My brother once thought he got a good deal on a virtually new silver Corolla, I spotted the middle of the hood had been re-sprayed, just a big blob about a foot and half wide with a bad attempt at blending, with the size of a Corolla's hood why didn't they just spray the whole thing.

And I just remembered, when I traded the Commodore in a couple of years later, the first thing the trade in assessor said was "that hood's been re-sprayed". I didn't deny it.

Same here. I’ve seen it on new cars and obvious repaints. As mentioned, different materials so it can happen.

The first brand new car I ever bought got hit at the 2.5-3 year mark. A friend of mine did all of the repairs to it at the body shop I used. One of the best paint matches I had ever seen. This was done in 2010, and I saw the car again in 2021 and it looked very good still.

A quality body man (or women) can match the paint so close it's hard to tell nowadays
20 years ago when they could only blend by eyeballing it usually turned out to be a disaster

Good seeing another long time member posting. I was starting to think myself, setec, pat and padetailer was all that was left

Yeah. Shop does extremely high quality work....

In my mind, I was like they paint skins off the line anyhow and wanted them to just R&R the bumper....kinda got fixated in keeping the factory paint untouched. I get the blending will net the best results

Flash . Are you in the collision biz ?

No, but I have worked in and around it a lot
If this shop is as high quality as you speak I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
 
I was only going to make a comment or an ask....they got paid on 290 line items on the estimate :rolleyes: Pro's all around............
 
When I did :rolleyes:......I got a different estimate- since it needed the film applied, from PPF shop that does good work on detailing and PPF. He bought a bodyshop business 2-3 years ago and is operating under 1 roof. I believe the bodyshop is around the corner from the detailing side. Anyhow, the estimate they gave me was a whopping 23 line item invoice. I'm sure it would be more as I was asking on street price initially vs paid by insurance. The previous remark was just me reacting to the being paid for 290 freakun billable items
