New trucks

I'm a Chevy guy and I own a 2006 Chevy Avalanche. The truck is awesome! I don't tow a lot but like you I always have something in the bed. The Avalanche has a shorter bed, but the back seat goes down and the rear windsheild comes out so you have plenty of room for hauling. And it has plenty of power for towing as well. Comfortable ride and every feature you can think of.

Just my opinion!

I used to trade every 2 - 3 years, and have had Fords since 1985. Loved every one of them, except for one Ranger with the 3.0 V-6. It didn't get as good mileage as the 4.0 L, and was shifting all the time because of the under power. Started with F-150s in 04, and love the ride, room, power and looks. The new ones with the 6 speed tranny is supposed to give decent mileage, even with the 5.4 L engine. My 07 super cab 2 WD gets 16 - 18, depending on use. In town and short trip mileage is not that great, but I love the truck. Ford has some good rebates and incentives now also. Best selling truck for many years, they must be doing something right. (And Ford didn't take tax payer bail out money like GM and Chrysler did).

I'm a Chevy guy all the way BUT when it comes to new trucks I would go with the Tundra.

See my signature, you'll be able to tell what I'd buy. Only thing I would change is I'd get the 6.2L V8 instead of the 5.3L.

I have a 1967 chevy c-10 & a 2001 F-150 now,but if i had a Choice to go new or newer it would be the first generation SRT-10 Viper Truck or the 2009/10 Dodge Ram Sport hands down!

I also find I'm always needing to haul something and have been kicking around the idea of getting a truck too as I hate borrowing friends trucks all the time. Towing is not something I'd do often either.

Since I'd have to wash and park the darn thing I'm not real big on full sized trucks. Seems that the mid-sized market is shrinking too but I've really been looking at the new Tacoma's. With the factory installed TRD supercharger covered under a full 5yr/60,000 mile warranty (making 304 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque), I think it's what I'm leaning towards. I like the more upscale features of the Ridgeline, but it's under powered and over priced IMO...plus it's kind of ugly. ;)

Just my $.02

I have the FX2 Sport. If I was to get a new one, I'd want the Lariat over the FX4 because of more luxurious interior and gearing that would probably give better mileage. The King Ranch or Platinum would be my choice if money were no object.

When I bought my F-150 earlier this year I did quite a bit of looking. I think all of the 1/2 ton options are pretty good, and it will come down to personal preference. I've got the crew cab 4x4 Lariat, pretty much loaded (everything but the tailgate extender), and I couldn't be happier. My second choice was the Tundra, but that was mostly because I was going from a 4Runner to the pickup and I had good experience with Toyota. The timing of the sticking gas pedal issue with Toyotas came out at the same time I was looking to buy, so that helped my decision.

New Ram Sport with 5.7L Hemi is a great truck

I have a friend who is a commercial fisherman who drove Chevy's. He bought a Tundra and says never again. I thought they were nice trucks. His comments are terrible gas mileage and the truck with a load always feels like it's on the edge of being out of control. Now this guy loads his truck heavy, loading crab pots in it and towing a trailer loaded as well. I have not experienced it just passing along what he says....And I believe him FWIW.

I would never buy a Tundra.

Not after the infamous camshaft failure recall.

It really depend on your needs. The Titan had a nice (My next door neighbor has one) and can be had at a decent price. The disadvantage is that it only comes in one engine/tranny choice. The Tundra also has a nice engine and stout frame. The Ford has several different engine/tranny combo to suit your needs. Ditto that with the Chevy/GMC twins. The Dodge is brand new with a better frame (more comfortable rear suspension). However, in the past Dodge transmissions were the weak link (it is probably rectified by now).

I am not sure, but maybe a midsize truck (Frontier/Tacoma) may suit your needs. I do not mention the Colorado/Canyon twins because they have terrible resale value. There is also the trusty Ford Ranger that seems to soldier on.

I would never buy a midsize truck.

And I hear you on the resale.

My friend got robbed when he went to trade the damn thing in.

go with a ford f350 diesel !! love mine lots a power

Not looking to get a diesel, but thanks.

It seems like you are looking to buy one of the Big 3, but if you are just using your truck for light duty may I suggest going out and test driving a Honda Ridgeline. Although it is only a v6 it will tow up to 5000 pounds and get better mileage than most of the trucks you are looking at. It rides better than any truck I have ever driven/been in, almost car like. It has AWD, and the new ones actually look way better than my 2006 version even though there has been no major redesign on them. Finally, you get Honda's quality and most importantly resale value that the Big 3 just cannot touch. As you might be able to tell, I am one very happy owner.

Way too overpriced IMO.

Probably the most important thing,is how much you want to spend. I have only owned one truck. Everyone told me it wasn't a truck. I just traded in the 2002 Cadillac EXT I had. ((my avatar) I now have a 2007 Cadilllac SUV with "Showroom Shinse" on the windows. I'll get pics up and change my avatar soon.
I was told that the Ridgeline did not get the gas mileage the manufactor claimed. It's a nice small pick up. Although I prefere GM.

Not a penny over 32k.

There are allot of factors to take into consideration.

  • New or Used?
  • Price
  • Warranty
  • Fuel Economy
  • Gasoline or Diesel?
  • Weight & Towing capacity
  • 2 wheel drive or 4X4?
  • Regular cab or crew cab?
  • How long will you keep it?
  • Commercial or private?
The list can go on forever but I think you get my point.

If you're buying new then all the "things to look for" on a used vehicle become irrelevant. However, buying a one or two year old truck will save you thousands in initial depreciation.

Buying a new vehicle can be a very emotional experience. The forces of "need" vs "want" are alive and well and the salesman will exploit the "want" because it's where the most money is.

Be sure to research important towing specifications for your vehicle (available in the owners manual or online at NADAguides.com) to determine the manufacturers suggested towing parameters for your vehicle. Over time, over-towing will stress your engine and your drive train wear and tear that could ultimately lead to costly repairs in the future.

Sit and put together a rational list and stick too it. There is plenty of information available on the Internet so the most important thing is to do your homework and check your emotions at the door.

New
Not a penny over 32k.
doesnt matter.
doesnt matter.
Gas
4x4, but if I can get a good deal on a 2wd Z71 I'll take it.
Regular or Ext. Cab.
Trade it in 5yrs later.

i test drove a ridgeline, and it felt too much like my colorado i had. nothing special there, to me. I was looking at any of the big 3 trucks half ton and landed on an 07 new body style silverado. LOVE it. wouldnt trade it for the same truck in the other 2. The extended cab chevys are the same as the 4dr Dodges as far as room on the inside. thats what i hate about dodge. to get something comparable to a real 4dr truck, u gotta get the mega cab.

I have the same body style truck as you do now.

I love the Honda Ridgeline... it's probably not the truck Grizzly is looking for but after owning a Pilot for a couple of years and riding in a couple of friends Ridgelines, I agree, it's a very functional vehicle with Honda quality.

If I were in the market for a new truck I would probably search Hemmings, AutoTraderClassic and eBay for a mint condition, all original 1969 to 1975 Blazer or Jimmy. Find one that came with air conditioning and the part time 4-wheel drive front end.

You'll get a rugged full size truck that anyone can work on, a full convertible, a classic that will hold it's value and go up in value, a truck you can enter into car shows and they look good too...

Here's an old 1973 all original Blazer I had back in 1999 to 2001, it was fun cruiser and boat puller... never much liked the color but I was the 3rd owner and it was in very nice original condition.

Mike,

If you had to get a brand new truck, such as 2010-2011, what would it be?

This is no longer true as of model year 2010. Dodge now has a full size Crewcab, they have done away with the extended cab with the doors that open the same as a crew. The dodge now offers standard cab, crewcab, megacab....The "quad" cab is gone.:props:

As far as a Honda Ridgeline goes, I've driven one a couple times. I have an Element and the wife has a Pilot, so when we go in for service we usually get a RL for a loaner. One time we had it for 3 days because of a problem on the Pilot (interior plastic was broken and replaced). All I will say is, If you gave me one I'd use it as trading stock on one of the big three trucks. It was weak on power, drove terrible, had visibility issues, and was very uncomfortable on any drive over about 30 minutes....And I own and love two other Honda's.

Nope.

No Ridgeline for me.

Dodge Dakota with the 4.7L
Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner
F-150 FX2 or FX4

Wouldnt ever buy a midsize Dakota.
Never would buy a Tacoma.
Maybe an FX4 if I could get it dirt cheap.

See my signature, you'll be able to tell what I'd buy. Only thing I would change is I'd get the 6.2L V8 instead of the 5.3L.

5.3 is a good motor. I like the Flex Fuel.

Rasky,

If I were you I would get a Regular Cab Sierra or Silverado.

An extended cab Tacoma 4x4 is stickered at 30k.

Insane.

Please tell me that picture is photoshopped. Please tell me you didn't get that nice shiny truck all muddy!:cry:

Its a truck.

Not a Corvette.

Trucks are meant to be used for work and to get dirty.

Right now I have an 07 Silverado Ext Cab 2wd Z71 LT, if anyone was wondering.

Looking at getting a 2010 GMC Sierra Regular Cab 4X4 LT, stickered at 34k.

I wont be buying in the really near future, but soon.

Have to do more research and find a good truck.

I've had a '83 silverado,'92 silverado,'05 silverado and now a '06 colorado and loved them all. I'm looking to get back into a big truck again, but resale on this small truck is poor to say the least.

2005 Silverado here. 6.0 Lt. engine 2500 series ext. cab. Bought it new & still feels new. If you dont need the hauling power ( 1o mpg) get the 1500 series but with about a 5.7 Lt engine better gear ratio for a little more mpg. Maybe about 17 or more mpg.
Mine drives like a car & hauls like a truck. I tow a construction trailer.
Hope this helps.

You may find good rebates & other offers on 1500 series. A local dealer is currently advertising 9K off sticker.

Nice truck. :props:

H3SUT with the 5.3L is a badass truck. You can find them pretty cheap down here. I saw one they other day not bad looking and has a 5 or 5.5 foot bed.

Also the Colorado/Cayon with the 5.3L is also nice.

For a fullsize truck I would go with the
New F150 with 5.4L or New Ram with 5.7L hemi
