A situation when a non-forced rotational DA's will correct BETTER than a Flex 3401....

Thanks for bringing this topic up. I had not considered the surbuf pads before with my PCXP. How much more cut can I expect versus the HydroTech pads or 5.5" flat pads with M105? What's the potential for damage if I keep the surbuf pad clean and use some common sense?

By the way, the 5.5" x 1" flat pads really helped with the Porsche this weekend. Thanks for your suggestions!

I know you tried to PM me, sorry about that, my box is clear now.

In my experience, Cyan pads cuts well and finish better than a surbuf pad, but surbuf pads cut noticeably better! Great pads to use with a DA. They do need to be followed up with a finer pad and polish, but they're awesome. If you use the surbuf as you would ormally use a cyan pad, there no more potential for damage. They're very easy to clean on the fly with just a few strokes with a pad conditioning brush. If you want the most cut with a DA, try surbufs!
 
Is it also worth mentioning for those reading the size of the surfbuff pads that people should pair with their DA polished for best results? I've noticed people posting larger pad sizes being optimal? Can anyone back this up?

Since I didn't buy the HT pads yet, do you think it smarter to try surbufs first for heavy cutting and stay with the 5.5" flats for now?

I'll PM you later, but thanks for the car wash. I'll try it on my wife's car which is dusty from the beach.

FYI, surbuf pads work best with non-diminishing abrasives(M105, Ultimate compound, optimum spray compound). If you don't regularly use any of those as your compounds, I'd go with HT pads. If you do, try the surbufs, and follow with the regular flat pads. Lets say you used M105/surbuf, *sometimes* you may have to follow with M105/orange, then a finer pad and finishing polish.

No problem on the car wash.

No worse than using an aggressive foam cutting pad on a DA Polisher... (with common sense).


The SurBuf Pads cut faster because of the fibers themselves, kind of akin to how a wool cutting pad cuts faster than a foam cutting pad on a rotary buffer.

The only downside is the SurBuf pads leave micro-marring but it's no big deal because most people are going to polish afterwards and the depth of the marring is shallow, so it polishes out easily.

With a 6" backing plate, 7" pad is optimal, but 6.5" works great. too. With a 5" backing plate, 6" pad would be optimal, but 5.5" works great as well.

Surbuf pads that is...

I'd say you should still get some tangerine and crimson HT pads regardless. The only HT pad I think the Surbuffs could replace would be the Cyan... Assuming of course the same criteria mentioned about which type of abrasives you are dealing in which Mark just mentioned.
