Need help with buying a few things

Very true! I would really like to use Slickooz detailing as my business name but I had a few friends say it doesn't sound very professional like others may have.

Yeah finding a logo to pair up with the name... will work if people associate it with GREAT work.

:iagree:What does Starbucks really mean?!?!??! Sound like a Hippy name - but their product sales and sales damn well....... very true what Ted said!

Yeah good stuff!!! Thanks makes me feel a lot better about having Slickooz in my business name... It not really the name of the business but what they produce.

Yep. Very true there so many brands out there where I have no clue what they sell unless I walk in and take a look.

I've always found it cliche for a business to use a generic name of something awesome to name their business (how many times have you heard eagle, wild, dragon, hawk, super, mega, pro, max, etc, in a name). I personally prefer something original, and a bit unusual at the same time.

Very true! HAHAHA when I was at the library a couple months ago when I was trying to figure out a name for my business. I had yellow pages and was writing a list of potential names and most of them were very generic. I was thinking the same thing, there are a lot of generic detailing business name... Some are very successful but I don't want to step on anyone toes and steal their "name".

I have always had in my mind that a business name shouldn't be hard to pronounce and don't misspell words like "easy/eazy" etc.. This will confuse other or will give them a hard time trying to find you online.
 
Another quick question... About 10 days ago Lexus called me and asked me to meet GM. I thought it went well and they told me they going call me in 3 days... Still nothing, if they call and tell me they going hire me, should I take the job knowing it full time? I really want to have my own business. But it too soon for me to know if I will be successful.

What would you guys think?
 
You could work at Lexus full time and set money aside to help launch your detailing biz. You could even start your business up as a side gig till business starts to take off. Once your detailing starts raking in more after expenses then Lexus, give them two weeks and thank them for the oppurtunity. Perhaps if Lexus likes you enough, you could have them refer you to their customers and cut them deals to help out business, and offer the Lexus staff deals if it helps your business out. The possibilities are endless.:cheers:
 
Yeah the only thing I hated about this process is that I went to meet a manager in Jan 2nd and now it's been 3 months and still no sure thing. Going give them a call tomorrow and see what is up. I really hope I don't need it and can start my own gig.
 
Wow Slick this thread really took off and definitely seems like something from the Let's help each other succeed group! lol. And Kris and Anthony have already given you a ton of great info.

I decided to go with my LLC this year due to I own a house and in the event that something happens and I was to get sued, my house cannot be touched. It basically ensures that if I am sued they can only take what my business is worth...which right now isn't too much unless they want a ton of products and polishers!

But as Kris and Anthony have said I'd just build your clientele first and get the products and equipment you think you need. I operated all last year without an extractor. But it's high on my list to purchase this year. It just makes things easier I think and as Kris said by not having one and you actually clean the carpets and seats it leaves them really wet.

As far as insurance...I'm still shopping around for it. I actually have a lot of companies turning me down for insurance because they ask what my experience is. I explain to them that I've been detailing for years as a hobby but have never worked in a shop for someone else. So, they have come back with, sorry but your lack of experience we can't take the risk. I've had 3 different companies tell me this. I've only received one actual quote for $1,200 and they want it paid up front. But there are all kinds of restrictions to it. I can't use any harsh chemicals, I have to put up barriers around the area I'm working, and the list goes on.

I'm almost considering forgetting about the insurance for now and just ensuring I have some money set aside in the event that I mess something up.

And in regards to your name Slickooz Detailing is nice, but I can see how people may look at it and think that it's not professional. What about Slick Detaling? I thin it's the ooz part that may throw people off. But that's my thoughts. My company name came from my name (Jason or Jay) and my gf's name. We were sitting around day dreaming about opening up a bar and what a name would be. She came up with CJ's, which is her 1st initial (Carrie) and mine. Well, I decided to mess with it and change C to Sea instead. That's how I came up with SeaJay's. It's was unique and available!

Sup everyone! After a little brain storming I decided to go with "Big Slick Detailing" as a business name. I use to play a lot of poker for a source of income. In poker Big Slick means your holding AK, one of the better cards you want to have before the flop.

You guys like the new name?

Thanks Ted! Going work with a friend to come out with something appealing. Want to start making shirts, so I can wear them while working.

Yup. I'd use a graphic with a car backed by the AK of spades. Now that's BIG SLICK. Find a good graphics artist in your area. It'll cost you a couple hundred but it will be worth it.
 
Very exciting when first starting out, I’m currently in the same boat. I have always been a little afraid to start something but I’m moving forward now. I have been detailing my cars and friends and family for a long time. People always ask who detailed the car. I really enjoy it and like what a lot of people said about it being a time to think and be one with your self I really agree with that.
I’m still building up my arsenal of products and my skill. I am on this site all the time reading as much as I can. This is an amazing resource with amazing people always willing to help.
 
This site def has a lot of knowledge and with enough reading/videos and practicing, you can easily step it up. I only been here about 5-6 months and have learned so much. Back in September I had never used a clay bar on my car because I thought it was too expensive. But we bought a new car in September and that when I searching how to take care your car. Now I'm trying to start a business and I got a few friends to help me make logo and biz card and a website. I just bought the domain for www.bigslickdetailing.com

Once you get rolling, ride the wave and don't look back.
Going use something like this for my logo. Going ask a friend to work on it and make it better.

I trying to put a list together for some equipments that I need. I have a Makita with no BP and was wondering if I should get a 6 inch BP. and about 12 pads. Is one wool pad enough for a whole car?

I also have a DA with 5.5 inch pads and was wonder should I get a smaller BP for a DA or the rotary for tight spots.
