Trim/Plastic Restorers - 4 different products

Great review Jason. I was thinking of ordering some UTTG tomorrow but will now wait. Can you let us know what you find in the morning if it rains tonight?

Hey David. Is there a way to fix this without replacing it? Products or a certain method?

Nice test, but none of those products are going to correct the problem. They only help by doing a temporary fix. The best way to do it is by recoloring the cladding. GM actually has a TSB on this issue and was doing the refinishing a short while ago under warranty. My brother in law had it done on his Avalance which had full cladding and it's still looking brand new.

I believe Pockets from Poorboy's advises a couple of applications right after each other so that the plastic soaks it right up. I would imagine this helps with durability. I am sure he will chime in if he sees this.

I have some smaller trim pieces on my Mustang that I have thought about taking off of the car and soaking it in a tray of one of these products to see if that might work.

Awesome review!:xyxthumbs:

Awesome test! :props:

I've used 3 out of the 4 and like and not 100% fond of any of them.

Black Wow: Nice darkening effect, PITA to apply.
PB TR: Very easy to apply, pretty good darkening ability, durability is sub-par.
Ultima: Very easy to apply, excellent durabilty, doesn't darken enough.

Still in search of a dressing that's easy to apply, darkens nicely, and has excellent durability.

I have CarPro PERL on the way that I'm anxious to try!

^I'd love to hear about it!

I have some pretty nasty trim and I need something with sufficient darkening effects!

(looking to choose from Blackwow and CarPro Pearl)

Nice write up and pics.I'm definetly watching this as the black trim is a pet peeve of mine

Yeah, unfortunately my truck isn't covered by this. At least according to the dealership. I talked to the dealer about it a year or two ago. Fortunately, my truck isn't awful. And this was more to test some products out. Once I find one I like I'll use it. I just account this to the plastics are 5 years old. They are going to fade over time. Just like other plastics on cars/trucks.

Great write-up Jay! :props: This is almost as good as a CEEDOG review lol :dblthumb2: But, I think your crazy about the smell of Poorboy's World Trim Restorer, haha. It has an excellent smell of coconut! Mine seemed to smell pretty strong, IMO. Maybe yours is different or they changed the formula? :dunno:

I'm in no way at CEEDOG level yet, he sets the bar very high.

In regards to the smell, mine really didn't have much of a smell. I mean my noise is not the strongest either, but it really only had a faint smell. It could of been coconuts but wasn't really strong at all.

Well, it didn't rain last night like it was suppose to. Instead I woke up to frost all over my truck. So, once the frost melts I may be able to tell if anything runs. I plan to wash my truck this weekend, which will also test the durability of some of these products. I have a feeling that washing the truck is going to remove the raggtopp and pbtr, but we shall see.

Is that where GM used the "Gatorback" to refinish the cladding? I know that's a lot of what was going on. The Avalanche forums talk a lot about this, but there are several of those guys that swear the Carsystem Refinish Restorer works as well or better.

These were the 2 exact products I was going to mention as well. Thanks Bob!

SeaJay, is it just me or does the Ultima Tire & Trim Guard have a more uniform coverage? I am currently testing a product on trim that has lasted about 2 months now with only 1 application, has been exposed to 2 automatic car washes and about 10 hand washes. On one small section I topped it with UTTG and it is very nice. It's sort of a labor intensive process and would take forever on your truck, but it has lasted for me. :xyxthumbs: Oh and it's available at Autogeek...

Yes the UTTG does seem to have better coverage than the others. We will see how they do when they get wet and after washes, etc.

Loved the write up. My personal experiences agree with you in that Black Wow has great darkening abilities. It will be a month this weekend since I applied it to my bumper. I can take a pic to show the progress and durability if you'd like.

Great test. Just a tip when using Poorboys World Trim Restore when plastic or rubber is really dry applying it thicker letting it dry then wiping off the access will make it rich dark and uniformed or you can apply multiple thin coats till you get the color you like. I normally apply a little thick and let it sit for about 15-30 minutes then I buff off the access.

It seems like you have to apply multiple coats of black wow as it soaks into the plastic. If you're detailing cars and time is money, this may not be the best product.

That's part of my thinking as well, same with the Poorboy's. If it's something I have to apply multiple coats of then it may not be my go to product for trims and plastics.

I'm about to go into a meeting for work but wanted to give everyone a quick update.

The black wow seems to have left oily spots...RaggTopp and Poorboys ran some (not really bad but a little bit) and the Ultima is still holding up well all though it seems to have faded a little bit more.

I took pics on lunch just don't have time to post them at this time. I'll post them up a little bit later.

Alright here are a couple pics I took on my lunch today. I was in a hurry so they aren't the best quality.

Here is what the Black Wow section looks like today...as you can see there are oily spots...

This is the poorboys section. It didn't run too much onto the paint but it did run on the plastic and left streaks.

This is the RaggTopp section - This one ran the most and it did run onto the paint which you can't really see too well here.

This is the Ultima section. As you can see it seems to have faded some along the edges and could probably use another coat.

So far a couple days later the Ultima is holding up very nice. The others have either run or left oily spots (black wow). So, as for these 4 I'm definitely liking the Ultima.

Try CarPro Pearl next or for the Ultimate, try G|Techniq C4! Amazing product!

There are many different plastics/textures, but IMO none of these products can/do "soak in" to exterior cladding materials as the OP applied to.

It's a little unclear to me from your initial post, and I don't have time to scrutinize the thread, I have used both the Black Wow and Poorboy's TR (although not extensively) and I believe the instructions for both are to buff dry. If you don't they will run or spot, as they are both silicone oils. The Ultima is different in the way the Meg's Ultimate Trim product is different from the oil-based products, and IME (with the Meg's) will last longer than the oils, but not that much longer (weeks to months).

or for the ultimate, try G|Techniq C4! Amazing product!

I have some and will use soon, but IMO the "ultimate" product for this will be Opti-Coat 2.0...which I probably won't use on trim for a while because of that pesky bottle of C4 I bought...
