How often do you change your oil?

Oh and they tried to sell me a new air filter last time and I had replaced it myself two months before. I just smiled and pulled the "My husband says he'll do it"

Jenn

I change the oil in both of my cars every 3 months, and have K&N air filters in both as well. I have no preferred brand of oil, whatever is cheapest.
Cabin filters are easily replaced as well, but most people overlook them.

How'd you come to the conclusion that someone is paying them off?

I have no idea..kinda dumb to be honest, but whatever.. especially since they have highs and lows on all brands and that they actually have the equipment to test the oil. I think they would know if the oil is bad or not, but what do I know..

Group III oil is technically synthetic and all major oil companies that make synthetics use a mixture of different groups. I am not saying that Mobil is the best but they own the synthetic market, easily surpassing the sales of all competitors. Pennzoil's most recent high-end synthetic, Ultra, is also primarily Group III, and, yes, that's the one that goes into Ferraris.

Its marketing and technically its a blend and not a true synthetic oil.

Also by marketing every German car company has a Mobil1 endorsement (IE money talks).

I'm not saying Mobil1 is bad but its not true full synthetic blend. I ran it in my car for four years straight before switching to German Castrol and Pureone's gold oil filters.

On new cars, first oil change is within the first 1000 to get all the break in metals and build oil out. Then the next @ about 3,000, then

Penz Ultra in my Altima ever 6-7000- Wix filter
Penz plat in my GMC ever 6-7000- Delco filter

I need to read the article about the GM oil life, Ive never followed it. I didnt reset it the first time I did my oil change and it didnt go off until about 18,000 miles, so Ive never trusted it. I do reset it everytime I change my oil now just to see if it comes one. Never has.

We shouldn't highjack this thread. Suffice it to say just join the biggest oil forum in the world, BITOG, and they will tell you that now technically Group III is considered 100% synthetic. The definition that you are using was true many years ago and the Amsoil people would always push it and now even Amsoil makes oil out of Group III and calls it synthetic and not a blend. By the way, German Castrol is a very fine oil---one of the best.

I use the computer in my wife's Tahoe to tell me when to change it. I change it a couple (maybe three times a year) following this schedule. It's a low mileage car. I use a Napa Gold Filter (Wix) & Valvoline.

On my F150 I use Motorcraft Oil (Blend) and Oil Filter. I'm using the truck to tell me when it's time to change. Only a year old and less than 6k on it so I'm not sure how well this method will work yet.

I do change oil (first change) before it hits 2000 miles. Not sure this is still necessary but old habits are hard to break.

I change depending on time usually 3 times a summer once after winter once in mid summer once before winter garage queen mr2 amsoil 10w40 she dosent see much milage but she is driven hard

I use a Napa Gold Filter (Wix) & Valvoline.

I used Quaker State, and Pennzoil each until engine rebuilds. I switched to Valvoline in my truck.

Nothing wrong with Valvoline oil. I like it alot and still use it in my 3/4 ton Chevy truck that has about 350,000 miles on it. I also have to recommend that if you're going to go to NAPA to get a good Gold filter you may as well buy their oil...it's Valvoline. At least the addresses were the same when I last checked several years ago. A friend put me on the to the filters and the Valvoline...I mean NAPA oil. Yep, that's what the truck's been eating for a long, long time. The first hundred thousand were on valvoline, and the next two fifty have been on NAPA oil. I don't drive it much anymore. If I ever get a new truck it'll eat synthetic.

Daily driver - 2004 RX330 AWD - every 7,500 miles or 6 months with Toyota synthetic.

Garage Queen - 1991 Toyota MR2, (sees less than 200 miles a year) - once a year with Pennzoil Platinum 100% synthetic.

It actually seems wasteful to change the oil after less than 200 miles but I got a great deal on the Pennzoil Platinum ($1.00 a quart, bought 4 cases) so it only costs around 5 bucks to change it. I reuse that drain oil in my old tractor, a circa 1983 J I Case. I use it in the engine and the hydrostatic drive and this beast still purrs like a kitten. I also reuse that drain oil in my snow blower, a circa 1985 Ariens.

On my wife's DD: synthetic and K&N filter every 5K miles.

On the NastyGT500/garage queen (LO): A few times a year depending upon what I have been up to--a race event, immediately afterwards, just cruising around/etc, maybe 2-3 times a year.

Cheap insurance IMO...

Using Amsoil full synthetic on this^^^

I don't even change mine, I let the dealership do it. It's only $15 and that's too cheap to not let them do it for me :)

Here are my cars and change schedule:

2001 BMW Z3 2.5i - Pentosin SHP Full Syn GRP V 0w30 with MANN Filter- Every 8500 miles (BMW says 15k or when SI light comes up but I don't follow that crap)

2001 LR Discovery - Mobile Delvac 15w40 with MANN Filter - Every 5000 miles

1984 Corvette - Royal Purple 5w30 with K&N filters (I have a dual set up) - Once a year (less than 2k put on per year if it is running or not torn apart)

1960 VW Drag Bug - Pentosin SHP GRP V 15w50 (Wix race filters 4 and strainer on sump one on each turbo return line and 2 from sump) - After each race day (Usually 6 times a year if I am racing)

2005 Saturn Ion (Wife's) - Mobile1 - 5w30 - MANN Filter (if aval) - every 5k miles

Its a very subjective thing to talk about. Oils these days are sythetic and more durable than they were years ago. I tend to change my oil every 500 miles...but im a freak. I cant stand the thought of waiting 2000 miles or more....and it only costs like $20-30 dollars if you do it yourself....so i tend to overchange on the safe side....plus I love that little boost in power with fresh oil!!

Sorry but that's pretty much the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Every 500 miles? Do you realize MANY high end manufacturers are going 15k+ on fully synthetic (ex. Mobil1). And there have been plenty of independent tests to support those claims. Do some research...you are throwing money out the window. It has also been proven that changing the oil too frequently has actually shown more wear in certain areas of the engine due to various reasons (slight oil break-down is "ideal" for peak lubrication). Read up on the independent tests; they are quite in depth and have the scientific facts to back up their claims.

While I do feel 15k is a bit much, I still have no problem going 8-10k with Mobil1 and a quality filter.

My VW Jetta TDI Daily driver Gets changed every 5,000 miles full synthetic. VW says Every 10,000 is recommended, as a matter of fact they give you free service when you buy one for the first 36,ooo miles @ 10,000 mile intervals of course ...... NOT! Way to long if you ask me. Wifes car that gets driven maybe 6-7,000 miles per year gets fresh oil every 6 months full synthetic. :buffing:
My 01 TDi gets changed at the factory recommended OCI of 10K and it now has 204k and it has no signs of any engine wear (cams look good, needs no make up oil in the 10k OCI, makes no unusual engine noises, fuel mileage has not fallen off).

As I have said before in this thread of un informed people, changing your oil too often WILL INCREASE ENGINE WEAR. The engineers know what they are doing. Dan

Every 5000 miles in my daily driver using Mobile 1.

Once a year in the toys. They don't exceed 3000 miles in a year.
