This may be interesting to many, as I have been thinking for a while to find solution to claying cars without paying the enormous price of $36 for 100g of clay + a bottle of Quick Detailer (I'm talking Australia).

The idea ( ) was born while I was playing with the kid's stuff in the playroom.

I've seen this on the table:

(The original re-usable adhesive )

.. so I started playing with it.

The feeling was familiar .. I tried folding it once, twice; it behaved like a ..

... CLAY, that's right.

The next step was to try it out on a dark colored car to see if any marring or the like will appear, so I divide the trunk into two to do my experiment.

I used the Megs QD as a lubricant, and after a few passes (to my surprise) I saw this:

Wow .. completed the whole trunk, no marring at all.

The surface was as smooth as glass ....

The next step was obviously to compare it with the $36 clay on another car :D

Im the MAN

Took a clean piece of kid's stuff and clay-ed a 4 years old car that has never been clay-ed before.

Here is the result using the kid's stuff:

(Wow, magic again .. heaps of bonded contaminants) :D

Then I clay-ed the same section with $36 clay, and guess what? The kid's stuff made it perfect so the other clay couldn't pick-up anything that was left after the kid's stuff.

Here is the photo of the 'expensive' clay after attempting to pick-up some bonded contaminant's left overs:

Herewith the two clays .. the bigger piece is the one we all use, the smaller is ..

(.. you know what ;0)))

... one more shot

I repeated this process on 3 more cars with the same result - the $2.48 kid's stuff worked as good as the other one.

Thanks for reading.

I've heard this before but never bought into it. After seeing your post with pictures how can I not?!?! Wow!!

Did it smear and stick to the paint any differently?

I gotta try this!

I saw someone do this on another forum with only moderate results. They were still able to pick up contaminants with Detailer's clay, but then again that could just be their lack of being thorough on the first pass.

By the way, you should look into buying QD concentrate in bulk, that can be crazy expensive if you keep buying it OTC.

Many years ago on another forum a member used that tacky clay or whatever it's called (that's used for temporary hanging of posters etc.) and found that it worked pretty much as well as "real" clay at a fraction of the price.

I spend about $25 per clay and this is very interesting. Is there truly a difference?

Yeah the ease of use of detailed clay is great... Remember if you spend 30 bucks on clay break the piece in half and you can use them much longer!

One of these days, someone will stumble on the correct bulk modelling clay thats works just as well as detailing clay

There is some bulk modelling clay on Amazon....

No, it doesn't stick to the paint as long as lubricant is used as with any other clay.

Give it a go, you'll be surprised as I was.

I wouldn't call this a moderate result, it does the job the same way as the "expensive' stuff.

:props:

This seems quite interesting :xyxthumbs:

I agree. The result is even more interesting.

That is exactly what prompted me to do the whole experiment; we are talking 10 fold difference in price here. :buffing:

Please see photos, no difference in performance, just in price :D

I have searched a few US sites that may sell this stuff under the same name to no avail.

I believe I'm not breaking any forum rules here by posting my discovery, so it appears that peps in Australia & UK may look for this product and save some money.

I have noticed that the white version of this product works best and feels like the one we all use. It comes in blue, white and packaging with various colors.

Best of luck and enjoy the new cheap clay.

Yeah, that's the one I remember from years ago, Blu Tack. I think by the time I found out about it, I already had so much clay I'm pretty much set for life.

Very interesting!

It is, I'm pretty sure that Blu Tack and the car clay is the same product, just re-badged and pumped up in price 10 times (again I'm talking Australia).

I have also noticed that Megs Smooth Surface Clay is tad softer then Blu Tack.

I'm also curious to hear opinions (after testing) as to how aggressive this new clay is comparing to other grades of car clay.

Wow, that's an awesome discovery - thanks for sharing mate!

Now, I wonder if my Megs clay will work for sticking posters to walls...

Dude! you just hit the jackpot. You can buy it by the kilo, re-badge it, re-box it and sell it for half the price.

No need, just wanted to share this with all of you guys, so we can all benefit.
