unique ways of getting new customers

Eventually you will get sick of working for free and half price details won't be any fun. Facebook is a waste of time and advertising dollars. Thinking outside the box is a good think but business fundamentals is what keeps you in business. Word of mouth is the best way to get customers. Each...

Feedback on Website Launch and Pricing!

Most people spend less than 2 minutes on my website. Knowing that, it's important to make sure people can quickly find what they are looking for. You are probably providing more info than what the customer is looking for. Ask yourself this, Do you really care what brand pipe wrench your plumber...

    How versatile is a steamer?

I have a Tornador blow gun but never bought the cleaning tool because I'm mobile and have a small compressor.

    Charge for mileage....

If it is a town just outside my posted travel area I charge $30 extra, anything farther I say no and just recommend a detailer closer to them. You can estimate your mileage for taxes you don't need to keep perfect records.

Credit card fees.... who's charging them?

You can't charge more for credit cards.

    Thinking about taking the plunge...

Earning a good living from a trade like auto detailing is very difficult. It's great as a part time gig or something on the side but that's about it. I don't know of a single mobile detailer in New England who runs a solid profitable business. Keep your job.

    Starting Up Part Time Detailing

Why not call around and see if an established detailer in your area will hire you for the summer?

Anyone charge strictly by the hour?

People need to know how much it is going to cost to get the car done. If I want to get a new house built and the builder tells me he charges $80hr I wouldn't have a clue what the house will cost.

    How versatile is a steamer?

I hardly ever use my steamer, I wish I spent that $900 differently.

I'm Back! I missed you guys.

I'm fortunate to have very little competition. Also I'm part time so I can cherry pick (as other detailers say I do) my customers and cars. The more I raise my prices the better my customer base gets. Also after trying some of the higher priced coatings (both Finest and Opti pro) I added a more...

I'm Back! I missed you guys.

Just wanted to say hi and reintroduce myself. I'm Mike (known in these parts as RustyTruck) from Afterglow RV Auto Detailing. I have been off Autogeek for a while because last year business was really busy. This year looks even better with coatings really taking off. I will be asking some...

    Help Pricing...

I would not travel 225 miles to clean a boat. That is close to a 4 hr ride each way. Why not make a few phone calls for the guy and find someone near where the boat is that can do it for him?

Help with gaining larger website audience

Over the summer set a $30 a month limit on Google adwords express. It will cost you a dollar a day but should help steer the right traffic to your site exactly from where you want it to come from.

Why you don’t need a website or business shirts when you’re starting off

I also disagree. If you are starting a service business you absolutely need a website. When people are looking to have a service performed people reach for a computer and do an internet search. It's 2014, no one is thumbing through the yellow pages. Your website should be up and running long...

How to get quicker but not lose quality?

    Insurance

Some guys say State Farm, they were not available in MA. I have my policy through RLI, I think they are in all 50 states.

$5,500 worth of detailing products... my STARTING overhead

To be successful as a mobile detailer you need to learn to travel light. That is what cuts down on set up and breakdown time. You need to find tools, products and techniques that let you do a lot with just a little. You will not want to bring a zillion things to every mobile detail job. The...

Anyone use Rinseless as their primary wash method?

I have not taken out the hose in over 2 years. I'm a mobile detailer and it is all I use.
