I'm posting for a friend. He has a Black 2011 BMW. These pictures were taken on parts of his trunk.

Are these rust spots? What can be done to fix these?

This is from a 2011 BMW?

It certainly looks like rust to me....

Mechanical repair; sand, treat, seal, prime, paint, and clear.....

This should be under warranty if it's a 2011........

my friend is asking if you can tell whether or not it's surface rust or below surface rust.

they appear to be rust. like bob said I would take it back to bmw. however if they say they are caused by rock chips, they might tell you to get bent.

short term you could use a rust converter pen and black touch up paint. done right it could look good, not perfect.

Are you sure they aren't rail dust? If so clay the vehicle, they can be everywhere. They look to be too large for rail dust but it is worth a shot before getting a new car repainted.

:iagree: this is where a clear bra comes in handy lol

a 2011!? I would bring that baby right back to the dealership. The bigger spot of rust appears to be rust that came through to the surface. The spots around it appear to be surface rust. I would clay it real good...then see what you're left with.

If that bigger spot is under the paint...it's just gonna spread. Sure this area wasn't repainted?? I find it really hard to believe a 2011 would rust like that if it's factory paint. Possibly a salvage vehicle?

he bought the car brand new a couple of months back. i find it really hard to believe too. why would BMW sell a brand new black 2011 with paint in this condition?

If this is indeed rust coming from underneath you've got troubles on the horizon that you shouldn't have to worry over. I've been in position like this before. My .02 cents AFTER you try the claying the affected surfaces...

...take it to a different BMW dealer and discuss it with them first. Ask their opinion of the spots, AND try and get their opinion in writing. Then take your information/ammo back to the original dealer. Politely ask them about it, then show them you've done your homework already.

I agree. If he bought it just a few months ago...this should absolutely be handled by the dealership. Honestly, I would flat out ask for a different car if it were me. Shouldn't have to repair rust on a brand new vehicle.

I'd Iron-X it just to see what that reveals. It'll eat the rust off the surface and you'll be able to tell what is under it.

I thought of this earlier as well, but I didn't suggest it since I've never used it. Iron-X seems to be a great product and I do think it's a great suggestion along with claying afterwards. Doing both will certainly tell you something about the problem.

A few years ago I purchased a pristine 4wheel drive truck with only 5000 miles on it. I was looking for a perfect, I mean flawless used truck and had finely found it. After giving them the down payment check an employee backed into it and crushed the whole right bedside. They offered to stick a new bed on it, I refused. The very next day I told them to give me my check back and I completely refused the truck...legally within the 3 day period. It wouln't have done them any good to try and fight me. I went to another dealership and spoke with a sales manager who's a close friend. He said I had a right to cancel within 3 days. I went straight to my bank and told them what had happened, then to the dealership.

It sounds like your friend may have had this car for longer than 3 days. If so, and you try claying/Iron-X and they reveal a bad story.... I'd be contacting an attorney asap. At the least, to find out what your rights are. You may have to settle for a repaint unfortunately.

Personally I would not touch it. The large spot looks like subsurface rust that bubbled the paint and came thru or a chip that rusted. Take it back to the dealership. If you screw with it there is a chance you make it worse or hide what the true cause is and void the warranty.

Do I understand this correctly? You agreed to buy a truck, gave a down payment, and before you took delivery of the truck. it was damaged by one of there employees.

So you thought you were buying a truck that had never been in an accident, and now it has. There is no way you would be obligated to buy this truck nor lose your down payment.

You and I know that, but the salesman, and the manager tried to convince me otherwise. They wanted to cash that LARGE check so bad it wasn't funny. They tried to convince me they could fix it. They didn't know the luck I'd had with body shops either. I wasn't about to let them fix it...didn't even want it anymore. The fella who backed into it apologized all over himself. Of course, when it happened I was so mad I couldn't see straight and told him, "The best thing you can do is get away from me."

To this day I cannot figure out how someone could back into a bright red truck with 3 inches of fresh snow on the ground. The dealership garage attendant backed it out of the garage and behind this white van. They were only about 4 feet from each other. This guy walks out gets into the van, and while they salesman had his head in the vehicle explaining some things to my wife...this dude in the van backed into it. He crushed the whole right side of the bed and the extended cap 4th door.

That's been 10 years ago and I'm still sick over it in a way. I bought a nice car somewhere else.

Moral of the story, don't be too worried over such small things, he could have ran over someone. Heck, look at what it saved me in gas over that time. Sure was a nice truck though.
