Dave and I… Bad Backs & Broken Bones… Just My Luck 2.0 (with photos)

So some of y’all remember last week’s “Just my luck” thread from DaveT. In case you didn’t catch it, here it is. http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/off-topic/94624-just-my-luck.html

Now I’ve discussed this with Dave (and my brother from another mother, Tim) ;) but thought I’d share with you guys.

No big secret that Dave and I are (and have been) chronic pain patients for many years now. We share a lot of similarities in that respect. But the wives with broken bones is one we never even IMAGINED would be something that we would have in common.

Last week right after his wife broke her arm…. Mine broke hers as well!

Last Monday I started pressure washing my driveway, which is no small feat. Spent several hours Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday doing the (large) lower part. But by Wednesday my back was in such bad shape that I literally couldn’t walk, (without a walker in the house) and you could forget about outside.

So anyhow… the upper part of the driveway needed finishing. The truth is that CarMomma didn’t like that I’d carved letters in it that said “FREE TRUCK DETAILING” (but you can’t read them from the street because they are on the downhill side). That message was to a friend of my son’s that IMO owes me money for doing his F350, but that’s another story, another time.

So Saturday, she couldn’t stand that the driveway wasn’t finished, and decided that she’d get out there and finish it. Being as I’d been in bed for three days, why not at least TRY and help her a bit. :dunno:

Fast forward... I helped her drag out the pressure washer to the upper end of the driveway. Got to checking the oil, and needed to put some in the engine (don’t want that expensive 13hp Honda engine giving up the ghost). Then looked at the pump oil and it was low. (Plus had water in it.) YIKES!!!! That CAT pump is $550 by itself! So she goes downstairs to the shop and had to climb over some bags of mud and grout (for flooring tile) to get to the area where I had a bottle of pump oil.

In the process…. she got caught up in it and ended up falling, BACKWARDS on her arse and wrist!

But being the trooper she is..... she brought the pump oil out to me, only to find out after I opened up the pump that it wasn’t enough oil, and the amount of water in the oil was totally unacceptable, which meant I had to drain, flush, and refill it.

But that was the least of it because I think at that time she’s fractured her wrist!!!!!! No doctors were open, and I’m not about to go to the ER for a fractured wrist. Mind ya’, not totally snapped, but something was definitely wrong! She kept saying it was just bruised and didn't want to go to the ER. Never mind having to sell a kidney to pay that darned bill!

And YES, we absolutely WOULD go to the ER if she’d been acting, (or hurting) like a totally broken bone does to you. I’m not crazy after all! (And do have an extra kidney)

I had a couple of elastic wrist braces here so she put both of them on it, in opposite directions and did lots of ice. Didn’t look good though, but she could move it.

RIGHT AFTERWARDS
Right_after.JPG

Meanwhile... any forward progress with my back resting for 3 days went out the window. I had to go to Northern to get some more pump oil, and I literally didn’t think I was going to make it back to the truck.

Move to Sunday and we put her wrist in a stiff brace from CVS, but her hand was swollen, as well as half way to her elbow. The only saving grace is it’s her left arm. But looking inside her wrist (between the vein to the outside edge) it was black and blue and the outside didn’t look good either.

She kept saying it was just a sprain, but I knew it looked more like a fracture, even though she didn’t have any real pain with it. (And refused to take any pain meds.)

NEXT DAY
Next_Day.JPG

So early Monday morning she called out local family doctor, after all, they have a full lab and do x-rays. She told them she’d fell, was bruised badly, and might be fractured. They put her off till Tuesday. OK then… we wait. But it gets worse! She goes in, gets the x-rays, and sure enough, TWO fractures…. inside and out. This is where it gets weird (well to an old guy like me) because they DID NOTHING. No cast, no improved brace, NADA, ZIP, ZERO. Geeesh…. I come from an era where you go to your family doctor with a minor fracture and they put a cast on it. Not these guys! I mean why not TELL US that they would not do anything and we'd have gone to Resurgeons in the first place.

IN BETWEEN - DAY BY DAY

We had to go to Resurgeons Orthopaedics to see an orthopedist, (of course). That didn’t happen till yesterday! Took the x-rays from the family doc and he didn’t even bother with taking new (and MUCH BETTER) ones with their hi-tech equipment.

The official diagnosis;
Closed die-punch intra-articular fracture of the distal end of the left radius.” Left wrist is broken in two places, end of both bones. The radius just happens to be the worst of the two, and the one he might very well do surgery on.

The tricky part is due to the positioning, had it been her dominant arm he’d be doing surgery TODAY. As it is, it’s her left arm so he put it in an Exo-Cast and has her coming back next Wednesday. With the warning…. If it has moved AT ALL by then, he said unequivocally that he WILL be doing surgery Friday.

BACK IN THE CAR.... HEADING HOME

And on top of that….

Want to hear the kicker?

I tweaked the LIVING SNOT out of my right shoulder getting out of the car at the ortho office! (Already been to one of their surgeons earlier this year with it.) Got a cortisone shot then, need ANOTHER one now!

He said then that we’d ‘try’ and avoid surgery on the rotator cuff, but I’d likely end up getting it sooner than later.

Yesterday afternoon, last night, and of course today I can’t move the friggin’ thing.

We’ll put that surgery on the list with my MUCH needed back surgeries.

Boy TODAY feels like SOONER!

So I wonder if Dave has a bad shoulder too?

Something tells me she'll be hopping about before I do if you know what I mean. ;)
Sounds to me like we need to head back down to the lower left coast. BOY could I use a Sanibel sunset about now!:dblthumb2:

Yeah buddy! You.... my brother from another mother! :D
Honestly brother... I don't know how in the world you've been able to stay on the road these last TWENTY months with your back acting up. (Even if it was only here and there.):dunno:
I keep forgetting to send you pictures of the "monster" that's been going up here for the last year. Well actually, it's just an addition (to what was a darned big church to begin with), but is as big as the last one you sent me shots of. Boy there is serious money in religion I reckon.

Bob

Well I Suwannee indeed brother Bob. BTW... that's how us southern boys say it. ;) As in; Waaaaaay down upon the Suwannee river. :D I gotta' say... this summer has been one for the injury books fo' sho!

Pea-pickin' ya' say.... well shucks, that reminds me. We need to make another trip to the farmers market and see if we can round up one last bushel each of purple hull, crowder, and butter peas! And it wouldn't hurt to get another 6 dozen ears of sweet corn whilst she's at it. :props: Mama is good about putting up peas, corn and 'maters in the summer to hold us through the winter. ;) That and plenty of home made vegetable soup!:dblthumb2:

OTOH.... you don't want to know about the time I broke both bones clean through on her RIGHT arm do ya?

Gotta' tell ya' anyhow.
We had rented a wood splitter and a wood chipper to get rid of yard debris as well as grind up some old firewood. So she's down at the bottom of the yard (at our old house) about 65'~70' away. Well I had been chunking pieces of firewood BEHIND her, WELL behind her. I'd brought home a rollback full of new 22' logs and was cutting them up right off the truck, rolling the logs through the gate, and putting them on the splitter one-by-one.

As I got to it I'd chunk the old firewood down to her to either grind, or throw over the fence. She'd been moving the entire time to my LEFT.... we'll call that 'zagging'. No danger of hitting her because she always moved away from where I was chunking the logs, RIGHT?

WEEEEEELLLLLLL..... lowdy lowdy, all of a sudden she decided not to 'zag' and suddenly 'ZIGGED' (moved to my RIGHT instead of my LEFT). Now keep in mind that I had the log splitter running wide open, and even worse, she had the wood chipper running wide open, (and we both had ear plugs in). What she didn't realize when she 'ZAGGED' was that already in flight, half way to her, was a log about the size of my upper arm!

I screamed, and yelled to no avail. Then I said words that the neighbors heard two houses down! Didn't stop her..... she walked right into the path of that log and SNAP both bones in her forearm were instantly popped like toothpicks! :(

By then the neighbors were already headed through our gate running towards us, knowing something was wrong. (Even above all the machine noise they knew from my screaming that all was not well in Poo Land.)

So the neighbors wife took her to the hospital. The get right to her, and ask what happened.

"My husband did it, but it was an accident" she said. The nurse looked at her like YEAH RIGHT. Then she asked why then didn't I bring her to the ER. Mama said "Because he's working in the yard and he can't stop". The nurse called a doctor, he asked, she said, "I told her... my husband did it, but he didn't mean to". The doctor was calling a cop to come look about then! That's when THANK GOD the neighbor (the wife of the neighbor actually) stepped in and clarified the situation.

The reality of which was simple. We had $300 a day worth of equipment sitting there and for me to stop and spend 4 hours in the ER would have cost us yet another day rental.

Once the neighbor told them the entire story they figured surely something that strange wouldn't have been made up, and decided not to have my arse hauled off to the poky.

Wow that's crazy!
Wishing you guys all the best.

Crazy is the norm around here I think.

Now if only I could ever get back to finishing that darned driveway!
(Just need to get that cortisone in my arm and get that moving first.)
Thank the good Lord that I'm going to my pain doc next week. Hopefully after a couple hits of his wonder juice in my low back I'll be back up to it by the end of the week.:dunno:

Hey that's it!!!!!!

We can have that Georgia 'geek' meet here!
Yeah.... that's the ticket. :xyxthumbs: Y'all can all come down and I'll teach ya' how to run that man killing pressure washer of mine. Figure 3~4 of ya' can get it done in half a day. Then when you're done with the driveway we might just get around to breaking out a buffer or three. :)

Rough time for you and your wife. Glad you can keep your sense of humor! Here's to everyone feeling better. Take care.

:laughing:Purple hulls you say?

Oh boy are those suckers darn right good eatin!
On my 2nd go round in the garden :hungry:

Nonthing like purple hull peas and a ham hock in the crock pot!!!!

Ok now I'm big time hungry .....your fault Brother!!

I'm not going to be able to do anything this weekend. We really need to plan a big get together!

I haven't posted any pics. When the bone pokes through there isn't much doubt it's broken. I have no idea how she did the toe. She said her feet went out from under her.

The thumb pic is today 8 days and 1 surgery later.

OMG, you all need to live in one of those sport ball things like they play soccer in!!!! Hope everyone is ok eventually.

Ooooooo.... I forgot the moral of the story!

CarMomma had been zagging and she suddenly decided to zig.

And the moral of the story is "Never ZIG when ya' shoulda' ZAGGED."

sorry to hear Tony.... I know how you feel: if it wasn't for bad luck, you'd have none.

As long as Carmomma has the soft cast on her arm...do NOT get her upset! Getting womped upside the noggin with those HURT!

Don't ask how I know...

Just all of ya, take care!

Bill

Wowzaaaaa Dave!

Bet she got upset about messing up her 'pedi'. :D

Here's last nights shot.

Don't think she'll be whopping me just yet. But YES, that thing is harder than it looks!

On another note, you should SEE my friggin shoulder today.

Swelling on the front, (front of arm/armpit area) to where it's sticking out a good inch. I have no freaking idea how it got so bad. :dunno: Been putting ice on it since Wednesday and it now has it's on darned zip code!

@Tenblade.... It's like I've had a darned implant put in and it moved to the front of my arm pit! As a friend told me today when he saw the picture; "That ain't right!"

Of course with it being a Holiday weekend.... can't get in to see a doc till Wednesday. In fact... it' the SAME ONE that Mama just saw, on the SAME DAY that she's going back, 40 minutes later.
