'dipping' cars

Now that is fun.

You guys do know that dipping your car is out - but covering it with Astro Turf is in...

Waiting for the shag version to come out to do mine.

And when it rains...it goes into stealth mode!

It's when you get the "Plasti Dip" spray in a can that is used for coating tool handles, etc... (think pliers with rubber handles) and paint your car or parts of your car with that rubber type coating. The "dip" comes in aerosol cans and gallon containers you can spray in a paint gun.

IMHO it looks like crap - pretty much like the handle of my pliers. I "dipped" some door bumper guards as a repair and ended up peeling it off because it just looked too "Tuned by Pep Boys" for me.

Ohhhh that makes sense. I know what plasti dip is I've used it on some chrome parts on my truck. I guess it never crossed my mind because I didn't think some one would do a whole car with it lol.

Now that there are so many choices of colors---including Candy Pearls...
I'm seriously thinking about Plasti-Dipping my '71 Deuce-and-a-Quarter's Swangas...

I just looked into it and it also has me thinking about doing my truck. It's actually pretty cool when done right and there are so many different colors.

I'm such a big fan of plasti dip but it does look terrible if not done properly. That's not meant to be aimed at anyone who's got bad results just saying that I have seen some of the negatives when I don't properly prep and mask the area. That being said I have some on my car and love how easy it peels off with proper amount of layers and how it looks on my car. Especially for how cheap it is, it's a great way to play with ideas and see how they look. Plasti dip gets a bad rap though because of people like this who spray without proper technique, prep, masking, and amount of layers. Shame too because while it may not be for everyone, it really is a great product.

To anyone who has experience with this:
Would you recommend putting on a wax/sealant/coating first to facilitate removal in the future, or would you strip/polish off any previously applied LSP before spraying in order to ensure the best adhesion?

^^^I've done both. Haven't had any adhesion issues on the 911 and that's waxed up good with Black Ice! My wheels I stripped before I coated...

Just go for it!

I have pieces dipped on my car.... Did not wax them before coating.
It has led up very well in our winters. :xyxthumbs:

Some folks have thought of this as cheap paint armour as well.
