DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

So what light bulbs are people using now? What is the best option? I was at home depot the other day and I say some Cree 5000K bulbs, they looked liked a single diode for $10, are those any good?
As for my set up I plan to the stand that I have for my work light and getting a clamp (similar to the one linked below) and using the dual bulb mount mentioned in this thread.

i posted a month ago about the Hyperikon. i have use a bunch of their stuff now at this point and i can recommend the 5000k PAR38 for the light stand setup.

if you have an outdoor light or want more spread out light for general lighting, i really like their BR40 bulbs. i think the PAR38 have a 40* spread whilst the BR40s have 110*-120* spread. i have them in 3000k outside in a few lamps and in my garage that i just hung a bazillion 4' 5000k LED tubes, i had a few fixtures that accepted medium base bulbs so i put 5000k BR40s in there and they are intense.

EDIT: the poster above me linked the exact bulbs i'm talking about for the rig.

Thank you for recommending them! I shoulda given credit where due, but couldn't remember where in the thread where I had read about them. Good to know about their other bulbs as well. :dblthumb2:

Wanted to add an update on the Hyperikon bulbs - used them over the weekend for 3-4 hours cleaning/waxing the Q5. Happy with the output and ability to show defects, and very happy to find out how cool to the touch they were after being on that long.

Has me considering their 4' led assemblies also on Amazon to boost overhead lighting in my garage

So I go the EcoSmart lights from Home Depot which I'll be using this weekend. Hopefully they do a good job.

Hi guys,
I bought the light stands and accidentally ordered 3 on amazon a while back. The shipping costs of sending them back isn't worth it, so I thought I'd offer you guys first. I have two of them that are not needed. It is this one Neewer 75"/6 Feet/190CM Photography Light Stands for Relfectors, Softboxes, Lights, Umbrellas, Backgrounds https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K69A0QY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_F21AxbSY3D0ZW

Im willing to sell them for some price, just let me know if interested we can figure something out. Thanks!

I would like to know this too. One socket of the bulb holder already broke :/

Same here. I had to epoxy both of the metal rings that threads into the socket, but the biggest problem is keeping the lights from sagging. It just can't handle the weight. I have rubber washers and still have to tighten the heck out of it. I would gladly pay more for something a little more heavy duty.

Same here x3. I dropped mine once and it stripped the plastic around the metal ring. Had to use CA glue to fix it up. You just have to be gently with them, especially in transport.

Quick questions about the lights. It seems from the little I've read, warmer toned lights are to be avoided and it's the bright white lights that seem to be desirable for detailing (5000k plus). Is that true with all paint colors? I have a black car and bought the Rupes penlight for spot checking. I noticed I can't see the swirls and marring as easily as I thought I'd be able to see it, but it seems to work much better on lighter colored vehicles. When my car is parked under an orange street light, you can see every swirl and imperfection with ease. Like when the sun is setting and gives off a very warm, orange like light, that's when I see the swirls the most in my car. Then I read this thread saying that brighter, whiter light is better.

Are black cars with metallic flake in the paint an exception to this rule, or is something up with my eyes :dunno:

There is on single lighting solution that will work the best for every scenario... arm yourself with a variety of options to be able to validate you are achieving the results you need.

Based on my experiences, LED lights in the daylight color temp are the the most effective in most situations, but it is always important to also check yourself in the sun and with any other lighting you may have at your disposal.

I read somewhere, and I can't recall where now, but someone said that the 3500K bulbs do a good job of showing paint defects as well. I wonder if because it is a warmer colour and may be less harsh? It could also be dependant on the colour of the paint you are inspecting? I am no expert and still learning but I was going to pick up a 3500K bulb to test out beside the 5000K to see the difference.

How would these do? They come in both 5000k and 3000k and seem to be bright as all hell

Those seem to be overkill and may actually wash out defects due to the brightness.... you would be spending $100 on a pair bulbs alone, which to me is excessive.

I still recommend this 4 pack for $42.50... we've been using them for the past 9 months or so as a replacement to the original bulbs that I posted. These are lighter, just as bright, and much cheaper.

Hey zmcgovern45, do you work with detailed image? Such as write reviews and answer questions regarding products your employer sells?

Yes, I am an author/technical expert for their Ask-A-Pro Blog... but they are not my employer.

I just bought the 4 pack of bulbs, I should get them tomorrow. I have the stand and the other piece for the bulbs. Can't wait to try these lights.
