Hi all,

Someone here recommended I try the 1Z Deep Plastic Cleaner on my coated leather seats to deep clean them, so I figured, why not, and ordered a bottle with my last order.

Their website specifically states "Use on the dashboard, steering wheel, shift knob, arm rests, finished leather and pedals.". I tried it in a inconspicuous spot, and all seemed to go real well, so I began spraying it on my seats, and agitating lightly with a soft toothbrush, and wiping off the residue.

Well, my seats, while coated, must have the dye mixed in with the coating, because it looks like it's stripped it off!

What do you guys think? Is a re-dye my only hope here?

In addition, a few months back, when I first applied some LEXOL cleaner to it and agitated, it looked like I took a dime sized spot of the dye off. It was a slightly darker color underneath. The problem is, this area (and now more, due to the 1Z) are slightly tacky, no matter how "clean" I try to get the area, and the fibers from my pants stick to them (like a lint brush) and the seat looks dirty again after a week or so. Any ideas what to do with this problem as well?

I can't tell 100% but it looks like there is some blue/grey dye transfer too. I will say from experience that this product works great. http://www.leatherworldtech.com/Products/Leather-Master-Super-Remover---250ml__LMSR250.aspx
Use terry cloth and remove quick. It will get out stuck on gunk too. Someone here recommended it and I'm glad they did. Just seal the leather after. I also used megs apc to clean leather and pinnacle leather cleaner, never felt tacky ( that was my worry too when switched to apc) Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanx for the link buddy .

Leatherique s a pretty good product also .

Well, after some more looking into it, based on your responses, I went at it again. Used a stiff scrub brush, and the 1Z, and removed nearly 100% of the dye transfer on the passengers seat. You guys are right.

Went to work on the passengers seat, and I think I've ruined the front part of the cover, that sits under the steering wheel. The rest is coming out well, but the front is turning out all splotchy. I wonder if perhaps some work was done to the front when the car was young. I wouldn't think so, but who knows?

Anyway, it appears the 1Z has actually stripped the protective lacquer or whatever coating off the seat, and took a bite out of the dye as well. The rest is holding up fine. A few spots are quite dark on the front cover still, so I'm trying to remove as much as I can without damaging the dye/leather, and I guess I'll just have to re-dye the drivers seat. I was planning on it eventually, but after this, I'm going to have to bump it up on the list a bit. At least now, leather conditioners might do some good! I'm really just guessing on the "stripping" bit, but the leather is indeed softer on the front bolster (it's "buttery", crazy soft) than the rest of the seat, and I can "rub" bits of material off the front bolster, kind of like when you rub your finger against something enough to create heat and friction, and you see bits and pieces around the surface your rubbing.

Currently:

Big, big difference on the passengers seat....and, the drivers.

I would get a softer brush as well , might be , I mean might be because it was too hard .

I'm the one who recommends it all the time it works great for treated leather you can not use on real leather untreated it is not meant for that kind of leather. It won't strip the coating but with any leather product you should do a test spot before using on any leather and all you have to do is put a drop of water on the seat if it soaks in its not treated. Here is a photo and this is a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica

I've always felt 1Z deep plastic cleaner is too strong for coated leather.

My leather is (was, perhaps) coated however. It worked GREAT on the passengers side. Looks brand new. Perhaps the coating on the drivers side has broken down a bit. I only had a problem on the front part of the cover, the rest of it matches the passengers seat now. Curious.

I've used it On coated leather with amazing results and no ill effect. I'll post a pic when I get a chance. For it eating the coating, the coating was probably already failing.
