Hey guys just picked up a 07 Silverado 1500 LTZ for the wife to daily. Going to be giving it a cut/polish and coating with cquk. Was wondering if anyone has used fg400 with a microfiber cutting pad on a 3401?

I have lake country CCS pads that I use and was thinking about grabbing a MF pad or 2 for back up to help speed things up. Or I was thinking about just busting out the rotary for the cutting step with a yellow CCS pad. Really curious to try a MF pad with the fg400. Thoughts?

I use fg400 with a MF cutting pad for heavier correction, it leaves a bit of hase. for lighter correction i use it on a foam poishing pad, little to no hase, especially on lighter paint.

Thanks guys. The paint is dark blue metallic and needs heavy correction especially the hood. What MF discs are you using?

I use the Rupes microfiber.

I only have Meguiar's compounds at this time. I can safely say that I have no problem removing 1000 grit with my porter cable, m105, and the Rupes disc. I doubt I would need anything that aggressive for most of what I've come across. I might use m86, or m205 before I went all the way to 105.

On a side note with the Rupes microfiber pads, I like to clean them with a terry cloth towel because I don't have compressed air, and the pad conditioning brush tends to be hard on them. Of course that could have been because I had the pad LOADED, and really dug into it with that brush. User error for sure on that toasted pad!

I'm not sure yet about microfiber pads and diminishing abrasives. I'll have to try it when the Menzerna polishes arrive.

FG400 doesn't play too well with certain types of MF pads. The paint heats up quickly and can sometimes get dangerously hot. Plus it has a tendency to leave a noticeable haze.

I did this dark blue Chevy with FG400 LC Orange Flat Pad and Rupes 15. It was heavily oxidized and had never been detailed in 7 years. One step correction was darn near perfect.

If you are going to try the Meguiar's DAMF Cutting Pads with your Flex 3401; I suggest using the 3M Foam Interface Pad

Thanks for the input guys! Might try the griots MF cutting pad. Worst case is I still have my LC CCS pads.

Lake Country also has their Ultra-Fiber pads for rotary polishers that would probably work great on the 3401.

7" Rupes MF discs are much stiffer, and more dense than the 6" version. You would probably need the interface pad allenk4 mentioned with those.

I used FG400 and surbuff mf cutting pads to get this out:

One it doesn't play well with are the LC MF pads. What others in your experience?

I agree 100%. The pads and the paint can heat up very quickly. Slow speed, zero pressure, clean pads after every 2 foot section. Even then...be careful.

Meguiars MF cutting discs. It is somewhat OK on the Finishing Discs but the product seems to get "overheated" as it becomes sorta difficult to wipe off.

FG400 works really well on foam though, especially any light cutting foam pad. It will wipe off like a finishing polish.

Maybe it's just me..... but I have to wonder why you'd need/want MF with the 3401 *WITH* FG400 knowing all the various troubles that others have had, have stated, done, endured, suffered through with experimenting trying to get MF pads to work on it. :dunno: There are plenty of options that don't include MF pads with that machine, even foamed wool for instance. Not like it'll not correct like a tornado on crack with a foam pad and FG400. :D Want more correction, switch to SMAT and let er' roll. ;)

I also found this to be true with the CarPro Denim Pads

M100 is a very economical choice that seems to work well with a variety of "Non-Foam" pads

Trust me I don't need to use a MF pad. Figured I would try it out. Probably just stick with the CCS pads if that's the case

I hear ya' there. :xyxthumbs:

I have so darned many 6½" pads that I never use, (many that have never been opened) that, that is the reason I bought the LC backing plate kit for my 3401. If for no other reason than to use those larger pads (most of which are CCS). That being said; the consensus on using them with the 3401 is about as varied as trying to get MF pads to work. (Especially with DAT compounds.)

Yeah I have a habit of buy stuff I really don't need! But I have only used the CCS pads and have had good luck with them. Was really just looking for a possible quicker way to bang out the compounding step without pulling out the trusty dusty Makita rotary.
