Griot's Garage G15/G21 Long-Throw Orbital Polisher *Ground-Up Redesign*

Simple fix, just go back to the old backing plate..or get a Makita PO5000C plate
Hopefully the LC UDOS plate doesn't have the same outcome

Aside from the integrated backing plate cooling...

“Due to its long-throw articulation, the G21 could not integrate fan cooling in its counterbalance like the G9. So we engineered the G21 with its cooling fan integrated into the backing plate. This new backing plate technology was developed exclusively for these machines and is undeniably best in class.”

Just switch out your pads more often
l typically do every panel or two anyways

If the machine get unusablly hot due to a backing plate, then Griot dropped the ball on design and should of did more than just bandaid it with a fanned BP

If the UDOS plate is shipping, that'd be a better route though..but it's probably still Preorder

I assume it’s for machine cooling and swapping pads probably won’t make a big difference, other than letting it cool while you swap. Although, the backing plate breakage could be due to plastic fatigue due to heat? But I’m not a materials expert...

Yes it's for machine Cooling, I'm just not sure how much the fan actually cools vs a regular vented plate...
neither has the shroud sealed by the plate like a factory Rupes... I'm just assuming the heat difference would be negliable...but reality is.. I think they band aided an issue and it wasn't enough..causing material to break down and fail

You can’t just go putting on any backing plate. Weight plays an important role. Use the manufacturers backing plate.

It does, as do pad weights...
You can compensate with a different weight pad if it did infact induce imbalance

Does anyone have a clue with what is going on at Griot's regarding their two long-throw machines? Have they been available, but then quickly sold out? Or, has production simply delayed the actual release?

If some have actually been sold and are being used....what is the consensus of them?

They shipped some of the new G21 but i think that is halted due to people having backing plate issues. While they try to address that issue, nothing is shipping, neither G15 nor G21. I believe the G15 hasn’t been shipped at all in this new version.

Some of the feedback was that the new G21 is hotter and due to being taller felt a little less balanced. There aren’t many reviews out there though so we have to wait more.

I’m sure Griot’s will make it right, if you have some time and can wait.

So am I.

As a company, that is all they strive to do.

I am sure this delay is not only frustrating to them, but a bit embarrassing as well.

That said, Griot's is willing to "take it on the chin" in order to deliver the very best product that they can.

Products that they can stand behind for a lifetime, as is their business model.

Personally, I find this very assuring. There are other more expensive polisher brands out there that will basically tell you to "Go scratch" if there is a breakdown after the warranty is up, even though the problems are well-documented.

Griot's has found the problem from step one, and has halted the shipment of the polishers in order to provide the products that are worthy of the Griot's name and reputation.

This makes me wonder if perhaps they need to re-think whatever their testing process is. I know they turn out great products, I have a G8 that I use for a lot of things.

Has anyone received an update from Griot’s on the G15? I had a good email dialog going with Griot’s customer service until about a month ago then they seemed to go radio silent... (never a good sign)

Now I see a that the projected ship date is the end of this month; not really sure what’s going on there?
