Guys, any of you have extremely sensitive skin when shaving?

THANK YOU!!!! This is awesome. I've never heard of a safety razor. I'm gonna order one tomorrow. A bit concerned about the technique of a safety razor, but I'll research.

youtube and "geofatboy" or "mantic59" videos will become your friend when learing wet shaving.

I just pluck each hair out one my one. I'm manly like that.

Kidding.

Actually, I have a trimmed full beard. (Short). I trim the beard up to a little below my jawline and down off my cheeks just a smidge. Part of the motivation there (other than appreciating the way I look in a beard), is that it's easier to get away with not shaving as my hair also grows fast (5 o clock shadow at noon type of guy). The biggest issue I have is around my throat. The hairs are stubborn and just won't come off with my razor or electric razor without effort. Effort that makes me sore afterwards!

I've been meaning to look into safety razor-ing. I suppose it would work just as well for us bearded folk!

I don't shave yet but my dad and brother use Braun shaver series 7 I know it is expensive but my brother and dad said they have sensitive skin and say it does not effect their face.

They aren't hard to shave with really, other than don't press down and let the razor do the work.

Same basically as the others just with less pressure and shave in straight lines with more passes. They work very well, I shaved with them myself until a few years ago. Never could find an electric that was worth a crap really.

I don't have a skin irritation problem so I can use the latest technology 5 blade ones.

I have to shave everyday, been that way since I was 17.

Although I am thinking about going back to a safety razor my self once I run out of blades next time.

Buy a good high quality razor and HIGH END Blades, don't skimp and you will happy. :xyxthumbs:

I have an electric that I use on a daily basis. It's a Phillips Norelco 3D Sensotouch. I think it works very well. The Norelco's always work for me.

That's amazing that you had never heard of safety razors, Mark.

I got my first one as a birthday gift when I was 11.
But I believe that was way before disposables, and such, were even invented!

Ugh, I hate even thinking about shaving. I do it about every other day or two, and I am like most everyone in this topic by having sensitive skin. I only shave in the shower now with hot water. I can't stand the after effects otherwise.

I'm also using Aveeno aftershave lotion, but does anyone else find that it's a bit filmy? I try to use a tiny amount, but sometimes I still find my face kind of oily after using it.

Now I'm going to research about safety razors. Thanks for the posts, everyone.

PS: For those using safety razors, how long is the shelf life?

Exactly.. :xyxthumbs:

Pretty much the same story here for me except I got mine at 16. :)

Not sure why one would have to watch a video on how to use one...

Stop into an Origins and sweet talk them into giving you some samples of the men's line. The have a non foaming shaving cream that works great for me. And the after shave is non burning and really soothes the skin. Over shaving tight skin is something to avoid, and always use a clean blade on sensitive areas.

The razor blade itself? I get about 4-5 shaves out of each one. The handle that holds the razor blade? Indefinitely.

Btw, one extra tip: a hot damp towel on the face before you add anything like preshave oil or shaving cream really helps soften the stubble up. Better then just standing in the shower.

I suffered from razor burn and ingrown hairs on my neck for years. My facial hair is very course and curly. After speaking with a few dermatologist and have found through trial and error that the closer the shave the more irritation i got. Any time you shave with a bladed razor you are essentially shaving skin cells as well. So the key is not to try for the closest shave possible and what ever you do don't ever shave against the grain.

I currently uses a Wahl trimmer to shave with. http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-8081-Detailer-Powerful/dp/B000H7O5M0/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390920842&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=wahl+datailer.
As strange as it seems it provides just close enough shave to not cause any irritation and still cuts relatively close.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks.

I've not had any razor burn or ingrown hairs since changing to straight razors a few years ago. It's been great. Not only do I get a shave better than a conventional razor, I never buy those expensive cartridges anymore.

I imagine a safety razor would be just as good, but straights are just more appealing to me.

Oh, get a decent shave soap and brush. Less chemicals and it's kinda fun. Make shaving an experience and not a chore.

It's a blade that can cut down to the bone in the blink of an eye. Probably not a bad idea; if you hadn't even heard of it before, to get the basics down!

This is the way I roll

Also hit up youtube and look up user mantic59, he has a wide selection of how-to's on wet-shaving. I learned a lot from that guys vid. He's a member on shavemyface.com and I think badgerandblade.com.

Best thread I've ever started. Thanks everyone! I just ordered a Merkur HD 34C(blade included). I REALLY hope this helps. I'm SO tired of looking like Freddy Kreuger after I shave. The ingrown hairs a couple days later. The skin irritation, not only right after I shave, but the following days. It all sucks! I have a very coarse beard. Hope I don't cut the crap outta myself!

For those of you who use hot water on your face before a shave, continue that practice, but give a chance to rinsing the blade with cold water a try and see how you like that. Try it for a week or more and then shave once rinsing with hot water. You might see a difference. I know I did...a big difference. I was always taught to rinse the blade with hot water and I have since changed.

I have a friend that shaves his head and he too now rinses his blade with cold water.

I was always taught to rinse with hot water, but that has changed.

I rinsed my razor with hot water while shaving for years, until recently. It's a tip from an elderly man that told me about it and I have to admit it makes a big difference. I get my face as hot as I can stand it, use a good scary sharp razor and rinse with cold water while shaving. It'll certainly wake you up in the morning, but it does give a better shave for me.

Good stuff, Bill. :dblthumb2:
