Horsepower War is in full effect

Come on guys really? Since you haven't figured it out yet, I'll spell it out for you......FAMILY. All of these are family cars. That's why they have a back seat. Try selling your wife on a new corvette in the garage when you have two kids. Yes they are fun to drive and a great way to get a performance car and still be able to take the kids to McDonalds. Trust me, I have a vette and a Camaro sitting in the garage. Why the Camaro? My wife got rid of her Saturn Sky Redline because she couldn't use it to "pick the kids up after school."

Ha. Yeah...nice family car it would make with no A/C and no radio. In fact, I think they even did something to the backseat of the Z28 to lower the weight of the vehicle so I'm not sure how 'family friendly' the back seat is (I'm not 100% sure about this). Besides, unleashing 500 hp in a vehicle carrying your wife and two kids is probably not something I would want to be doing. The kind of fun you're talking about can be had in the SS for about $30,000 less. Granted, there are folks out there who will probably see things the way you described and buy one anyway.

Meticulous... where do you track and what's the cost if you don't mind me asking?

I am very curious, why would ANYONE buy a Z/28 Camaro when they can buy a Corvette C7 Z51 1LT, 2LT, or 3LT for much LESS? I'f i'm not mistaken, a C6 Z06 had a similar MSRP. I've driven Corvettes and Camaros and the Corvette is miles better, granted they were stock without a track suspension similar to the Z/28.

So to summarize Camaro Z/28 vs Corvette Z51. Pay 1/3 less for a BETTER car. Install suspension and brakes. Now you have a MUCH BETTER car for less.

The C7 is NOT 1/3 the price of a Z/28, atleast not MSRP but I "kinda" see what your saying though, its just the math I've got a problem with.

I'm loving the hp wars and can't wait to see what the future market has in store. I am partial to Ford but enjoy almost all muscle cars (except the camaro, don't care for the looks). I know I won't be able to afford one but hopefully I have the opportunity to detail a few of these critters!

I take the wife in kids in the Shelby all the time and my daughter loves it, plus there is plenty of room in the trunk. I have also had 2 adults in the back seat and took the parents for a few blasts. That is the main reason I don't look at the Vette or Viper. It's nice to put 3 other people in the car and enjoy spirited driving.

As far as interior room and comfort is concerned the Challenger definitely has the most room out of all 3.

I agree the prices are getting ridiculous.

NJ Motorsports Park is where I am going to track my Charger RT. Prices depend on the skill level and track time, I am looking at 300 for the track and another 100 for insurance.

As far as drag racing is concerned we go to Englishtown Raceway Park. My club rents the track for the day and you can go silly. Made 15 passes with my Durango RT. I use to run a 10 sec Olds 442 at Etown back in the day.

Don't race the Shelby because I don't want to catch the bug again and make it less streetable to do better at the track. It is still comfortable to drive, not too loud, can hear my music and the wife and kids like it. Although the wife wants an automatic, not so she can drive it, because she doesn't like the jerkyness of the stick. The 1 piece carbon fiber drive shaft and upgraded rear suspension stiffened things up a bit.

I am glad i am past all of that, had my sports car days back in the late 70's, early 80's..

Need to keep the Driver Licence. :D

I hope they can make that Challenger controllable for the street for those who could actually afford one.

680 HP is quite a lot for a street car that one would be driving everyday.

Its not just the horsepower but how to use the power and the chassis that can get it to the ground. Most of these cars were quite simple in design just a few years back and now some are quite amazing and approaching supercar levels.

I do feel this is the last showing .... my children will likely only remember a traditional pushrod V8 from dads "old" Vette. It appears small engines with multiple turbo's are coming quickly and while full of power just don't seem to offer the sound, feel, and full band torque of a V8.

The Challenger needs like 1000 horsepower. It's like the fat kid at school hollering "Hey! Wait for me!"

Funny, I think the Camaro is the best looking one of the three. Of course I'm a GM guy. I've never liked the Mustang, mostly from my experiences back in the early 90's when everyone who had one thought it was something special. They would go to the track with their stock 5.0 and think they had a race car. Then we'd go to the Friday night show n shine and there would be a row of them with their hoods open showing off the same thing I could see if I walked into the dealership. To each their own. If it wasn't for different opinions and likes/dislikes, there wouldn't be a horsepower war and cars would be about as exciting as a yugo

Nah, it just needs a Big Block, the right Big Block like the original Hemi or a Wedge, build on one of those..... :xyxthumbs:

Real torque.... Frame twisting torque.

Not sure if a unibody could handle that kind of torque though.

Might need a frame under it.....

If it was a Ford I would be thinking a 427 Cobra, 428 Cobra Jet or a 429 Boss.

They still use Big Blocks in the NHRA, more so in the Nitro Cars though...... They are larger than the motors that I listed though. :D

I get a laugh every time I see one of the newer cars when they pull up beside somebody my age or older with a real muscle car that's built and done right....

There is just something about a big block that's built right....

And that deep ear cracking thunder that one just can't get from a small block....

Interesting and so true. I enjoy having guys that are crazy about their cars performance. It makes it fun for everyone. Someone is always going to have a faster car. I have a '90 GT and it's a fun little car to drive very "spiritedly" around town although that doesn't help when trying to achieve decent gas mileage. There are loads of cars that are faster than mine and I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm just happy to see the horsepower wars with muscle cars and not imports. Now if you want arguably the best of both worlds you could turbo LS swap a foxbody with plenty of power on reserve but that's another topic...

The funny thing is how slow the cars really are when compared to the Top Fuel Cars.....

The manufacturers brag about a sub 4 second 0-60 times..

The Top Fuel Cars go a 1/4 Mile in that time at over 300 MPH....

The Funny Cars aren't far behind in the 4 second range......

Back when I was into it all I remember a guy making a statement...

A guy asked him WOW you car is that fast?

He said no, your car is that slow.......

I somewhat agree with you. I have had 70's big block muscle cars and now have modern muscle cars, but prefer modern muscle. Yes I love the sound of a big block with a nice cam in it but the ride, handling, comfort, top speed, braking and rattle and creek free ride has sold me on modern muscle. IMO the amount of money you would have to through at a classic muscle car to make it ride, handle and brake like a modern muscle car is not worth it.

I would love to have both, but wouldn't we all.

Yeah but the grin and the throw you though the rear window power and the sound are worth it from a big block. :D

Yeah I had mine too back then, it was fast enough for me at 13 sec 1/4 mile with street tires. :)

And they sounded good even with the stock exhaust .....

They didn't have that tinny sound that the modern cars seem to have.. Even with the aftermarket systems....

I, too, remember my big blocks.
Still had more FUN, though, modding the 265 in the '55!

And...Thanks for the reminder:
I'll have to post some modern small-block-muscle exhaust-sound-offs...

:)

Not sure if the new V8 Mustangs that I usually see are stock exhaust or aftermarket....

But they sound horrible, nothing at all like a V8 should sound like IMO. They sound more like 4 bangers to me and I know they are V8's....

At least the older 5.0 Mustangs sounded like a V8.....

There is a guy around with a Big Block Vette that sounds really good, he doesn't know how to drive it, but it does sound good and I can tell it's got a nice cam in it too.

Dunno.....
