I'm baffled - still have swirls after hours of work

that looks like compounding residue to me. compound residue can often give the illusion of scratches in my experience. i understand that youre doing an ipa wipedown but unless you do it a few times (using a new clean surface of your microfiber towel everytime) you wont get all the residue off. try "lightly" going over the places where you think there is scratching and see if they "change". if they do, that means that the residue is just being moved around causing it to look different.

also, m105 is a PAIN IN THE @$$ to remove. it could very well be reside from the m105 compound. i have personally sprayed with IPA, optimum power clean, meguairs all-purpose cleaner, wiped in between each one of these applications, and STILL had m105 residue on the car. finally i "buffed" it off by using m205 on a brand new white pad, then another clean white pad. its important to understand (when detailing) that wiping a surface with a towel is just like rinsing with water, they both simply "decrease the concentration" of whatever youre trying to remove. thats why you need to wipe multiple times with a clean microfiber surface, to ensure your actually getting the chemical "off" and not just moving it around.

also, if it is marring, you may be pressing too hard on the microfiber while removing polish/compound residue. this would induce scratches.

i am willing to bet that it is stubborn m105 residue.

Hmmm maybe I am pressing down too hard when I'm wiping off the residue.

Tip, if your finding a product tuff to remove grab some water or QD and spritz it on the panel, then remove. This will aid in removal and also provide some lubrication to reduce the chance of marring while rubbing.

Bill, I think you're darned close dude! Even without blowing up the photos it's clear that it's VERY improved as you go.
:cool pics:

You've done a LOT of passes there, don't wanna' take the clear down to where you end up with a failure. (Well maybe not today, but it's not gonna' take that much work every time you hit at it.)

Consider that the Blacklight/Lava alone is going to give you a depth that'll make you cry. :dblthumb2: (that's a good thing) Still have the V7 to spritz the top with, should be the slickest thing on your street without a doubt.

Remember, the only person that needs to be pleased is you. ;)

The guys that are suggesting that my issue is towel induced marring are correct. What I'm seeing isn't swirls, they're towel marks. With that in mind, in the future I'll be very careful not to press down hard when removing anything from the paint.

I got a hold of some Megs Ultimate Compound yesterday and decided to try it out on the roof. I'm not touching that trunk lid again until the next re-correct.

I used a white pad with the UC and a black pad with 205. I'm not satisfied with the results. Posted a few pictures below.

I want to hit the roof section again with UC/Orange pad then 205/White pad. Thoughts/opinions?

This shot is what the roof looks like after the UC and 205, under the lights in my garage. If it looked that good outside in the sun I'd be ecstatic.

This shot is the roof section after polishing, all lights out, under the Brinkmann.

This one is a section of the roof that's been untouched, all lights out, under the Brinkmann..

This last one is the trunk lid (205 white then black pad), that is staying as is, under Brinkmann light only.

As I said before, you're dealing with very soft paint, hence, the towel marks. Not much you can do about that.

I understand but if I can get rid of them I'd like to. Then, in the future when I wash the car (almost always with ONR) I will use my Vac N Blo to dry it to minimize more marring. I could be wrong but I think that my use of cheap MF towels did this and now that I've got some good ones (with more on the way), this won't happen again or at least happen less.

You're right on track. :dblthumb2:

Looks great in the last pics, amazing what good quality MF towels make!
Are you satisfied with your results?

Not so much but I'm going to have to live with it. I'll post up some roof pics shortly.

You guys are probably sick of looking at pictures of my paint. I finished up the roof last night with Ultimate Compound/Orange pad followed by M205/White pad. I'm not 100% happy with the results but it's going to have to do.

In some pictures the marring looks light or doesn't appear at all. In others, it's quite evident. I did a little experiment to see if I was reintroducing the marring or the existing marring is still there. Check out the picture below with only the Brinkmann as the light source. The white line shows the general direction of the marring. The green line shows the direction in which I wiped the polish off and sprayed & wiped down with IPA solution. I can't believe that the marring still remains after all I've done to the paint. It's maddening. I'm not doing the roof again and will finish the rest of the car with Ultimate Compound followed M205, Blacklight, Lava and V7. I've had it.

Here are some where the paint looks great. The one with the bottle was taken with the lights on, the others with just the Brinkmann.

My brothers black paint is the same way, I can't get it to finish marr free. Tackle another car and you'll be confident!

Well, I'm used to work on soft paints, and I'm yet to come across one that won't finish perfect with some PO85RD (SF4500) and a Black or Blue finishing pads...

I'm having fun now. Once it's done I'll get it outside and get some pics.

Comparing your 2 pics, I'd say is 100% better!

As you said, you're having fun now.:applause:

Guess now you know why so many glazes and sealants are out there by now, huh? Something to be said about having a bit of oils that level the surface and of course stuff that has 'fillers'. ;)

I think I see the marring along the green line, that's weird for sure, especially as you wiped 90° off angle. :dunno:

End of the day if you can cover it, (with some reasonable durability) it should be fine.

Haha yeah, the number of products out there is overwhelming. I noticed that V7 hides the towel marring somewhat. I have a gallon of it and plan to use it after every wash.

I finally finished up the paint portion of my detail. I wasn't able to get any outdoor shots, it's either raining or snowing here constantly, it seems.
Products Used
Ultimate Compound
M205
Blacklight
Lava
V7
I'm pretty happy with it overall.
Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions.

Looking Good!!!!!:props:

I am sure you learned a lot through this entire experience. The trick going forward is proper maintenance (washing techniques) so you would have to do this again.

Welcome to the club.... this is how most of us got their start.

Thank you!

From now on, no cheap MF towels and after I wash I'm going to use my Metro Vac n Blo to dry it along with some very soft MF towels.

Next up is my wife's 2005 Hyundai. That's going to be my practice car for both interior and exterior. It's beat up pretty bad.
