More cut with AiO or stronger polish?

If you really want faster cut out of an AIO, use a Griots MF Fast Finishing pad.

I wish there was some form of scale to guide. Maybe there is but something numerical that had ratings on pads and polishes so you'd know a wise way to incrementally increase. I know there's general stages between polish types and pads, etc but I want more precision and a scale!

That’s something I feel everyone has wished for but I have always felt it’s not very realistic

How do you rank them?

Manufacturers description or end user feedback?

Both are totally subjective and subject to so many variables such as technique, corresponding product being used, etc

And in all honesty, I think most people on here who have corrected a few cars ENJOY the thrill of the chase

Running test spots and finding that sweet combo is a rush

I know there are folks who just want black and white but spend some hours running a polisher and your outlook generally changes

It’s called the dark side and you will go over to it

Bwahahahaha

I agree, chilly. Plus it depends on how THIS paint behaves today. There are many variables with paint, even within the same vehicle manufacturers.

Absolutely, then you factor in the constant changes to paint that you pros are seeing

Thinner and thinner, water based, organic, free range, whatever

Sandro on Car Craft did a video on a new Subie WRX with only EIGHTY microns of paint, TOTAL

Talk about an almost impossible variable to contend with and as you say, the only thing that matters is THIS PAINT IN FRONT OF ME, TODAY, HERE and NOW

I have worked on a lot of Toyota paint and I learned real quickly that counting on a combination that worked in Alaska to work in Hawaii was a waste of time

There is an constant flood of new product lines and brands, its a never ending stream that's impossible to keep up with

Look at Rupes, they COMPLETELY rejiggered their consumables line, top to bottom

It's great stuff, not saying it isn't, but it would totally cause any chart or list to immediately need to be rewritten

Personally, I feel it's more important than ever to have a smaller core of products/pads/liquids that you know well and that come from companies that are heavily invested in paint work

Get a system if you want and LEARN IT and stick with it until the day comes that you run into that one car with paint that won't respond to anything you have and then reach out for help

Chasing the newest/greatest/coolest polishing liquids and pads is like chasing 100% correction on some old sketchy paint; probably not a good idea

Ok, I will climb down off my soapbox because I am preaching to the choir

I still believe if your an hobbyist and want better results you should skip an AIO. To me an AIO is more of a professional service for people that are not that particular. Most hobbyists are looking for a bigger turnaround and many want perfection.

JMO. :)

I had never thought about it in those terms but I can certainly see your point

I have 2 different uses for 3D Speed and when I think about it you are right, I grab it as a "friends and family" product for a quick "wow that looks nice" moment or I use it as a final polish that just happens to have protection

I am actually one of those people who likes the looks and performance of 3D Poxy so the short protection life of Speed is not an issue for me as I top it right off the bat

I know I have been wanting to try some of 3Ds finishing polishes to follow 3D One to see if they would produce the same results as the abrasive in 3D Speed

This is for those times when I want the same cut and finish level but I don't want to leave protection because I have something else in mind

But at the same time there is a good chance that the protection elements have a lot to do with how easy 3D Speed is to use, the long cycle time, wipe off, etc

I often use Sonax Perfect Finish to follow 3d One, but I am finding it dust's a lot in my environment

I know some people see SPF and 3D One as essentially the same product and they probably are

I found 3D One to cut more then sonax perfect finish and it can dust for sure in my environment as well.

I will confess I tried SPF based on reviews and product suggestions from Todd Cooperider, Matt Moreman, etc

I read and heard “low to no dusting”

Not so much

When I looked carefully at videos of it being used in almost every one where the paint was dark sure enough, there’s a fallout pattern surrounding the working area

It works very well but little to no dust?

Not in my world

I got the smallest bottle and when it’s gone I doubt I will buy more

Another reason I am looking at a new final polish

*Griot's Correcting Cream........ You're welcome. ;)

Lol

I never bought any Griots products in the past because of their shipping costs/policies to Alaska and Hawaii but now that there are other options for purchasing/shipping maybe it’s time

I have seen several “pro level” detailers use their BOSS system with great results

Maybe it’s time to take the plunge

Much obliged

Makes sense as I still see some imperfections in the right light/angles. For now, I'm good but next time I think I'll go with more of a true polish vs the AIO. I'm sure we'll have some 70 degree days around here in December where I'll be ready to get outside and tackle it again. Problem will be withholding the purchase of each new polish I keep reading up on.

Lots of good polishes, the ones i have used all worked. They just have different user experiences and cut levels. 3D one, sonax perfect finish, rupes da fine, griots correcting cream, gyeon primer, 3D ACA 520 and sonax cutmax (compound).

See, I knew you were already peeking over the edge down into the rabbit hole...

Yeah so now the question is, where does it stop?! The top of the washer and dryer are looking pretty dang good, the wife's car is white and dang near spotless so it is on a maintain only schedule for now so what else can I polish without starting a volunteer detail service in the family or neighborhood?!

:buffing: :D

Last winter i picked up 2 junk panels if you want to practice. It will definitely give you more confidence with the machine. The only thing to be aware of IME is since i laid my panel flat i was kinda not in my comfort zone when i first started on my doors this year. :) But i got the hand of it, keep your body close to the machine and don't over extend.

Interesting as I noticed on the top of even just my sedan I felt awkward. Used a small step stool to feel better but can imagine a taller vehicle has its own unique challenges up on the top portions.

The word will get out, trust me...

It always does if you do good work

Sadly I limited myself to family and VERY good friends in Alaska for one simple reason

I ran/retired from the largest Civil division in the Alaska State Court System

My division handled everything from small claims to Superior Court Appeals and I KNOW how many frivolous lawsuits are filed by petty @$$ holes with a grudge or burr up their butt and I wasn't about to even do FREE stuff for strangers

That's the world we live in

Go get yourself some junkyard hoods and go to town

I found several body shops that were more than happy to have stuff hauled off and you can really hone your skills and test new products

Its amazing how many times you can scuff up an old body panel and correct it

Chicago Auto Pros did a youtube on what it REALLY takes to burn through clear coat and they were able to hit a hood with like 50+ cycles with cutting compound before they burned it

I'm 6 foot so i used a small step stool but the best thing i done this year was to open my car doors as well. It was a treat polishing the roof this year. Almost has fun when working on the hood.

Same. Over 6ft but it just didn't feel right and even with the step stool. The open doors feels like a duh moment... I should have tried that!

I’m 5’ 11” and along with open doors on some vehicles these guys are my friends
