The brief for this detail was simply to get the paint sorted out. No engine bay, no interior, and even the owner was even happy to simply have a basic wash on the wheels - but I landed up giving them a proper decon and seal... well...because they needed it.

Before

During - the process was to pressure rinse the fender liners, tyres, wheels and calipers. Then spray the whole area down with Carchem APC @1:5 through a Gloria Foammaster, let it dwell, agitate with a variety of brushes and mitts, then pressure rinse. I then hit the wheels with some TAC Systems Iron Zero, let it dwell, agitated and pressure rinsed thoroughly. Auto-DNA Wheel Cream was then applied for protection and the tyres dressed with Carchem PERL neat. The fender liners were dressed with Carchem Vinyl and Rubber Dressing.

After wash and decon.

The car was obviously dirty and before washing with Carchem Luxury Shampoo the car had Valet Pro Advanced Neutral Snowfoam applied, left to dwell then pressure rinsed off.

In the weak morning sun you can already start to see the swirls.

The car was decontaminated using TAC Systems Iron Zero, Capro Tar-x and Shield Heavy Duty Clay.

Now the naked paint revealed the true horror.

The vulnerable sections were taped up prior to the initial cut, which was intended to remove the vast majority of the damage. I eventually settle on Menzerna SHC 300 on Orange Lake Country Hybrids. The paint was considerably softer than all the other Audi's I have detailed and so the foam had the advantage of 'soaking up' more of the residue and leaving behind less hazing to clean up, which was done with Menzerna SF4000 on Black Lake Country pads.

After cutting.

After polishing.

This bird dropping had etched really deep into the paint and sadly is very much still visible. I could probably have wet-sanded it out but that's not really in the best interest of a daily driver.

Luckily this one wasn't etched as deep

15_zpsdhiiznll.jpg

Here there was a deep scratch on rear fender.

Again the exposed edges are taped up to avoid striking through.

Here is a 50/50 of one door corrected and the other not.

Often overlooked areas were cleaned.

After

The exhaust tips before even being washed. They were in a really sad state.

22_zpsyd25zvsk.jpg

After wash they looked better but now showed the true extent of the corrosion.

23_zpsv8yqbx82.jpg

After a quick polish with Meguiars NXT All Metal Polish.

24_zpsbjf4x3ue.jpg

All of the badges/emblems were cleaned.

Here are a few after shots.

As always, thanks for looking and any comments or questions are welcome.

:hi:

Omg! That owner sure got their money's worth. Hopefully they'll stop 'cleaning' it with a Brillo pad now.

wow! that's got to be the most hammered paint i've ever seen in all of your write-ups. excellent job lawrence!

Wow! I'm going to have a nightmare from those before pics! Excellent work, write up and PICS! Well done...

Whew!!! "Horror" was the perfect word for that paint!!! Looks as if that car was driven through the African jungle a few hundred times!! WOW how do people let their cars get like that!?!? Excellent recovery!!! Maybe your great work will motivate the owner to take a little more car of such a nice car.

I actually had a long chat with the owner beforehand around how important proper maintenance post detail is, and he has invested heavily in tools and products, and I have been teaching him how to wash the car correctly going forward.

Nice turnaround.:xyxthumbs:
Thank you

Thanks. I agree. I don't remember doing one as bad as this. I am just really thankful the paint was on the soft side... cutting all that damage out of typical hard Audi paint would probably have resulted in an extra step.

How to: - "Polish A3urd" - brilliant
LOL. Thanks!

Thanks Scott. The owner never knew that is how his car could look and was completely blown away when he fetched it from me. He used many swear words when he saw it for the first time (all in a good way of course). I think he is just as excited about starting to take care of it himself now instead of sending it to the local swirl-o-matic.

Omg. The before shots were things nightmares are made of. The owner of that car should be ashamed of themselves. I hope you charged a boat load of money for that job. Very nice sir

Wow!!! Nice turnaround.
Thanks Justin

Looks like he washed that with a Barb-Wired Fence !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL -thanks.

Beautiful job my friend!

Kyle
Thanks Kyle

Thank you. I did charge appropriately (well in respect of what my local market will tolerate anyway).

I can't believe how good the swirls came out... outstanding job..

damn what the bleep happened in the first picks. Looks real bad until you fixed it.

Thanks Bill. I suspect he was using something like one of those aggressive sponges typically used in the kitchen, to scrub off dried on bird droppings or similar. The paint was also quite soft which didn't help, but yeah, it is quite shocking how bad the paint was.

One of our very best detailers here on AG

BTW what does a detail like that cost?
