Occam's-Razor
Definition:
1. Occam's (or Ockham's)-Razor is:
a principle attributed to William of Ockham (c. 1287–1347),
a Logician and Franciscan Friar...Born in Ockham, a village in the English county of Surrey.
2.
William of Ockham's particular way of explaining/stating:
"The Principle of Economy" (parsimony)…Which was:
3.
"Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily."
But it appears this principle: "Economy in the use of means, to achieve something…"
-Goes back to at least Aristotle who taught:
"Nature operates in the shortest way possible."
-Later, Isaac Newton stated this principle as:
"We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances."
-Shakespeare would write of Occam's Razor: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.".
-As Einstein originally put it:
"This is an interesting example of the fact that even scholars of audacious spirit and fine instinct,
can be obstructed in the interpretation of facts by philosophical prejudices."
(But later he changed it to):
"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
UH OH!!! Here I go again...not being
'economical', as it were, in another one of my postings.
-Better than any of my seemingly interminable attempts…
This probably sums it all up:
An example of not being: “Occam's Razor-compliant (as pointed out by Mike Phillips)…
Examples of being “Occam’s Razor compliant (per: Mike Phillips/MP articles)…
