Got the delivery today. This is the one that I was telling you geeks about. Car has been sitting in a building for over 20 years.

Let the marinade begin. Mike will know this step.

Until tomorrow.

Niiiice! Love me some "barn finds"! Can't wait to see the finished product!

1962 Starfire, what a cool car. I love the side trim on those and if I remember correct they have a really cool steering wheel. A 62 and 65 Starfire are on my bucket list of cars to own.

I haven't seen a Starfire in 40 years, & with the Firestone redline tires. I had a set of those, bald by 20K miles, but looked unusually cool.

Always appreciate some Oldsmobile love...

That is a rare beast for sure! What an awesome car! I really love the wheels with the redlines! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Awesome! These are my favorite detailing projects. Taking a barn find and restoring the original single stage paint.

If #7 won't bring it back to life nothing will, well except for maybe #3....

I buffed out a 1960 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible for Mark Privratsky (customer car builder), about 20 years ago. Very rare and cool car.

Looking forward to the after pictures and thank you for taking the before pictures.

:xyxthumbs:

I will be back in there this evening. I plan to lay down another coat of the #7 and then start on the interior while it sits another 24 hours.
I hope to be polishing at least by Friday into Saturday.

Finding these old gems is like finding an old painting thought lost forever. With the right products and patience, these old finishes can be brought back from the grave....:props:

Looking forward to seeing more!! :dblthumb2:

Sorry for losing the images. I went and moved the files.

Here are some before and after from the past two days. The initial coat of #7 went in well, but was hard go remove. So I grabbed some MF towels and laid down another layer. I got in the shop later, so I did not get to start on the interior and I also had a BMW X5 to remove the front plastic film in preparation for polishing and Opti-Coat.

So here are some of the earlier pics and then a few more from this evening.

Marinade #1

Marinade #2

Test Spot...So I could not wait, so I pulled back a bit of marinade #2 to test a spot to see what I could get out of the old paint. I started with a green polish pad, and M205. May try another polish tomorrow. Looks like I will be able to pull a good bit of gloss out, but I may not go any further to risk going too deep.

Looks like it will turn out very nice. LOVE that car!

Keep us posted!

I thought my morning coffee made me blind. I did not see pics at first. Love the car.

Some very nice progress indeed! :props:

Did you move the pictures location in Photo-Bucket, they're no longer available?

Use soft terry cloth to remove the #7. The large loop of fiber, (called the nap), will SLICE into the film and break it up making it easier to remove.

At this point you're not concerned about using super soft microfiber over cotton terry cloth, you can switch to microfiber in future steps.

I agree, some very dramatic before and after results just from rubbing down with an oil that's been around since the time of the Model T.

I cringe when I see great pictures like this hosted on Photobucket because I know their future. Even with a Pro Account, as soon as the person stops paying the bill even pro account pictures disappear.

Photos loaded onto the AutogeekOnline Gallery will be here as long as Autogeek is here and Autogeek isn't going away in anyone's lifetime.

I just moved the pics on PB to a separate folder.

Mike: Am I correct in my thinking that I should be first going for gloss enhancement and not so much correction? That is how I feel. The paint has cracking and also some scratches that I do not feel would be beneficial to go after. I think a really good polish and a good coat of high end wax will be more than sufficient to make the customer happy. I do have some chrome to polish as well.

Gloss enhancement is a positive byproduct from bring life back to the paint, that is gorging it with the oils which restores the vibrant color and removing some of the dead, oxidized paint which smooths the surface over as well as clarifies it.

Lacquer Cracking or Crows Feet.

Leave it alone. The cracks run throughout the layer of paint, abrading the surface just reveals more of the crack, it won't remove it so just polish the surface and that's the safe route.

That's what I would do. After the #7 machine polish with a light or fine cut polish and a foam pad. Be careful to avoid instilling Tiger Stripes.

There are two kinds of Tiger Stripes, the kind that a painter puts in and the kind a detailer puts in.

With single stage paint, if you abrade the paint unevenly, you can actually leave trails or stripes in the paint that mimic where you ran a buffer more in some areas than other areas.

Metallic single stage paints are very easy to tiger stripe with rotary buffer but you can also do it with single stage paints.

Just keep the buffer moving and overlap your passes and it should be an issue.
