Porter Cable 7424XP

Why the flat pads? Why the Griot Garage DA? Im in the market for an orbital too and thought the PC was the best (since everywhere I see it is referenced). Do I really need more power?
if there not flat all they do is start to rip and dont have the bite/cut to them . flat pads make the job go alot faster also

Do some research om the Flex3401, sorry Mark you knw I had to say something LOL....:dblthumb2:

Looked at and it's out of budget.....Griot's it is.

The Meguiar's backing plate works best and is recommended by Meguiar's for using the Dual Action (DA) Microfiber (MF) correction system.
The Hook and loop on the Megs backing plate are shorter, creates less heat and has been tested and proven to work with the Megs DA MF system.

Once you get the DA (I have both PCxp and Griot's...I like them both...the Griots is a good choice) you will need polishing product.

To get you started I personally would recommend:

For the Foam Pads Megs M105 and M205.
NOTE: The 105/205 work best with the Kevin Brown Method.
or
Meg Ultimate Compound and Megs Ultimate Polish
NOTE: The Ultimate products may be easier to start with.

Can I use the Lake Country Pads you referenced earlier or do I need to use Meguiars?

I'm sorry to all, this is VERY new topic to me and I'm trying to learn as much as possible and do it right so I don't screw it up!

I have both and I like the PC better then the Griots.

Griots is a excellent choice!

The Meguiars backing plate tends to keep the the MF pads a bit cooler than the LC backing plate. When using foam pads, you can get away with either backing plate.

So when you say foam pads work with either plate that means the LC pads will work just fine with the Meguiars backing plate?

Be prepared to be overwhelmed...lol

Yepper, you have not even asked the dreaded..."What LSP do you like best?" question.

FYI
I did a swirled Mazda 3 with a red metal flake paint today.
I used the DA MF 5.5" cutting pad and Megs DA compound.
Followed by Menz PO85 with the Megs DA MF 5.5" finishing pad.
Then I used a 5.5" LC blue flat pad to apply the LSP.

A complete correction detail and only used a foam pad for LSP?
The flake looked like it was popping out of the hood when it was done!!!

malibuboats91 - Are you confused yet?

Dumb question....LSP?

With what machine did you use? The Flex?

That's what I need to do to my 2010 jetta! I have been on vacation so once I get back home the search is on for what I am going to get between the PC and the griots. I found the coupon I received not to be too good compared to the deals I can find elsewhere so I have a little time. Thanks for the help so far! It's greatly appreciated as I am new to the whole waxing process that isn't done by hand lol.

Sorry 'bout the acronym...Last Step Product (LSP)

PC7424xp

Using MF DA cutting discs and D300 compound Megs recommends spreed of 4800 OPM
I used the MF DA finishing disc with Menz PO85rd at speed 3800 OPM
The PC does that just fine.

Why? Any particular reason?

The Griots does have more power, but I really ever use it at full power. The PC7424xp

has a better feel to it, I think it handles a bit nicer and seems to be built better, a little bit more sturdy.

I respectfully disagree with your comments.

It doesn't matter if you don't use it at full power. If you think about it, at lower speeds, you NEED more power to keep the pad rotating. With the MF system, you need all the power you can get at lower speeds.

I have to agree with Mark on this one. I have the PC and plan on purchasing a Griots. I used the Griots and found it to be a much nicer machine in terms of ease of use and power. The extra power keeps the pad rotating at times the PC will stop. Very helpful.

I plan on relegating the PC to a 3.5" backplate machine.

I also have a Flex rotary that I love. However, I rarely use it as I hate carrying around two machines in my tiny trunk.

As for pads, I use the CCS pads and they work fine. When they wear out, I will b replacing them with the flat pads though. I rarely use them anymore either as I have the Megs DAMF system now and I love it. The only pads I seem to grab now that are not MF are the grey, blue, and red. Those do not seem to wear out quick, so I will have those for a while.
