Radar detector reccomendation ?

Exactly! Every time I've owned a radar detector I got a ticket. They are helpful at times but still not worth the money IMO. They just let you know you're getting a ticket before the cop even writes it. :D

Rasky,

I can just see a cop saying "....and here's your ticket. Btw, your car suuuuure looks good!!!"

Good point Detail_Dude!!!

For the results that Professional Detailers, such as RaskyR1, impart on their own vehicles, as well as those of their Clients', the "panel-surface-slickness" and the "suuuuure looks good", are just some of the reasons these particular vehicles would be in need of: Speedometer-recalibration!!

Should be a: 'thrown-out-of-court-no-brainer-decision' for the Judge presiding over Traffic Court, in such cause-for-speeding cases.

Just saying...

:)

V1 is as good as it gets man, worth the money in my opinion.

i got rid of mine 5 years ago. it only let me know wheni was getting tickets. got rid of it and no more tickets(knock on wood).

let us know what u end up getting

-And being that I'm kinda old...I remember, and as mentioned, find the need for what the Interstate System of Highways was often referred to when they were first opened for public use on the so-called public-eminent-domains: ExpressWays

In that regard: I've often invoked what I feel is my obligation for "public-service".

Long time Escort (the radar detector) user ... had an 8500 for about 10 years, and a few years ago upgraded to the 9500ix.

The 9500ix is AMAZING ... with the built in GPS it locks out false alerts so my daily commute is completely silent ... except for the warning I programmed in to remind me to check my speed before I go under the speed cameras (has saved me plenty of times).

I just added the 'live' smart cord to my detector, so now it links up with my phone and shares my alerts / reports and warns me of alerts other drivers have marked as well. The Live system also updates me on red-light cameras and speed cameras in their database as well.

A year or two I agree that V1 or Escort were the tops; however in my mind Valentine has failed to innovate at all, and they don't offer GPS or 'live' services. On the flip side I have heard Valentine customer service is tops, and if you are looking at a used detector you can send it in to be serviced for a pretty reasonable rate and get it all updated / upgraded. The 9500ix allows you to update / program it yourself.

^^ I have read about the GPS feature of those units, thats really cool! What really works for me and seems to be the cheapest is "grandpa mode" I leave plenty early usually at least 30 min if its over an hr drive, more if its several hrs and drive the speed limit. If something comes up, I can take my time (i.e. ate mexican the night before), accidents, detours, construction, no problem and I usually still get there with ample time. In addition to all this, it saves gas money as most cars are engineered to get optimum fuel savings between 50-70 mph (depending on the car). Driving high speeds in the city is worthless and I laugh at people that do that, those lights will catch you every time.

Not in Florida! A wallet ID may still work up north but not here. I am better off not badging a State Trooper. Flashing it almost guarantees a ticket. They even stop marked patrol cars for speeding. I have relegated all of my speeding to the race track these days.

That's pretty interesting, actually...is that some sort of institutional effort to stop the "good ol' boy" network, or just the state boys trying to maintain their rep of being the hardest-butts? I still see marked cars do all kinds of crazy stuff up here, even though the laws are pretty specific about the circumstances and requirements for them breaking traffic laws.

Now that I'm thinking about it, you see tons of cars here with the shields suction-cupped in the driver corner of the windshields, which I understand are not LEO's but family and relatives, but the clear message is "don't even bother", this person knows someone...

It is totally the Staties flexing their muscle. They have this fixation over it being "their highway". Local to local and county to county are pretty good to one another. But, if you are really showing your butt then you deserve a ticket. I used to hate having a shield thrust in my face and a demand for a break. My answer was always, "press hard with the pen sir, there are five copies."

I know cops speed on duty and commit other infractions. Now, they deserve a citation if they are blatantly being idiots. What cranks us up is getting stopped enroute to a call. We don't always run lights and sirens to every call but we do need to get there.

I have been researching myself and getting ready to upgrade mine. Basically, I have narrowed it to two choices. The Escort 9500ix and the Escort Redline.

The Redline is supposed to have crazy range and off axis detection but does not have GPS.

I travel quite a bit for my job, so I am thinking the Redline may be best for it's long range detection.

Valentine One. Don't even bother with any of the others. Even my 18 year old V1 still works great.

V1. Love mine and it has saved me numerous times. I bought a blend mount and love that almost as much as well.

Do yourself and others a favor and save your money. Just drive safely and obey the laws and you won't get any tickets. Radar dectectors are such a false sense of security.

True. I know more police officers that will let you go with a warning if you don't have a radar detector than if you do...

If you do get stopped for anything, not just speeding, and they see a detector you are probably going to get at least one ticket!!!!

I had the same dilema, and ended up with the ix, and I absolutely would go back and make the same decision. Not having any false alerts on your normal routes is so huge I can't stress it enough.

Either way you can demo a detector and if you don't like it you can return it/exchange it.

As for range, the GPS changes the sensitivity based upon your speed. In ideal conditions (0 humidity in Arizona) I have gotten 10+ miles of warning.

Radar detectors are tools to give you more information about what is going on around you. If you drive like a fool or do not pay attention to traffic you will most certainly still get a ticket.

However, with state budget short falls there are a lot of communities that are decreasing limits to create revenue generation traps in direct contradiction to the engineering studies, and that alone warrants some extra protection. Also Police normally turn on their radar when there is an accident or other emergency that gives detector owners a huge heads up to start paying extra attention.

Not to mention that statistically detector owners are 28% less likely to be in an accident. Basically they pay more attention to what is going on around them. I really don't give a rip how fast people drive as long as the road/weather/traffic conditions allow for it. What makes me rage is the people on their cell phones, eating, fussing with their kids or generally doing anything except driving that make the roads a dangerous place.

But with all that said I am one of the few people who do my racing on actual tracks and not on the public roads.

To the latter point, I have been pulled over several times and made no effort to conceal my detector, and have not received a ticket; but at the same time I made the officer very at ease and showed a concern for their safety as well.

Radar detectors are not good, and they are not bad. They are a tool, and it is all in how you use them.

been driving for 16+ years without a ticket...never needed to spend extra money on one of these radar detectors
hope you geeks know that the speed limit is there for a reason, it's not a choice whether you want to obey it or not
and if you just follow the limit instead of going 20 miles above the speed limit, you only get to your destination 5-10 minutes faster...not to mention you waste more gas

Thanks for all the replies. I already knew if money was no object, I'd get the V1. I also did read good reviews on the higher end Escorts. Surprised to see no Whistlers. I already knew the Cobras were junk.

As a follow up does anyone use Trapster on their smartphone ? I have a friend who swears by it. I generally drive like an old man. I got a big ticket 25 years ago and it wasn't even that fast but I've driven at or below the limit ever since. But my wife has a heavy foot. She has no tickets either. But when we bought our SVT Cobra the other members of the Mustang club said its not if you'll get a ticket, just when. So I thought with today's fines it's a nice tool to keep us legal. The mustang's sweet spot at highway speeds is unfortunately 80. It just very easily creeps up there. And we will be traveling from our home in Reading PA several times to my in law's new shore property in Ocean City NJ this year. Jersey drivers drive fast, but they always nab the guy with out of state plates. Thanks, Spiney.
