Review: Ultima Interior Guard Plus (UIGP)

In the photo below it appears you applied the product to the red side, perhaps it's just the way you were holding it for the picture. I would think the red side would be the handle for the applicator and applying the product on the gray side since it looks like it's much more soft. May have been why you got that red spec on the seat. Can you clarify which side of the applicator you used?

LOL!!! Yes, theres a very long funny story that goes with this but I used the "INCORRECT" side of the applicator. You are correct

ROFL!!! I've been wanting to ask you this question for weeks now, but I was afraid I might offend you somehow lol.

Well, I've got a good hard laugh in for today. Care to elaborate ha ha?

I'm glad you said something. I wonder how many hundred people were concerned they would hurt my feelings and didn't say anything. LOL! I have extremely thick skin! (I think) I'm always happy when people tell me what they think.

I gotta get back to work but I promise to tell you the story later (lunch time) Certainly after all that build-up it will be a let down :)

Ok,so as you know I've been raving about Ultima products for a very long time. At DF 2011 my buddy Adam (HarleyGuy) borrowed a bottle of UTTG from the Ultima booth to try it out on his vette. So he unscrews the lid and dumps some directly on the trim and I start squaking at him about how its all wrong. Apply it thin! Apply it thin! :bash:
So then he takes the applicator (similar to the UIGP applicator but blue instead of red) and he grabs it by the blue side and starts buffing it in. So I tell him "You're using the wrong side!" So he says to me, "what are you talking about? this is a handle on this side"

It all clicked right then and I felt rather blonde  Anytime I had used those applicators I had used the wrong side of them (more than once) After the first time I did it I just never questioned it. LOL, even now I still use that side of it for trim.

 Awesome Corey.

LOL!!! Corey, you're a bigger man than I am. No way I would have admitted that!!

:dblthumb2: Guys :)

Mark, I must say it was hard to admit but once I said there was a story I was asking for it.... I didn't know anyone would ask me to tell the story! LOL Im the MAN

Ask Adam about it. It was funny because I had already gotten pretty excited over how much he overapplied to the surface. By the time I started going about the applicator... well, it was pretty funny

I just rinse it out with water, let it dry, and put it away. That doesn't remove the sealant from the pad obviously but thats fine. Mine doesn't get dirty since I always clean the surfaces well first. Let me know if that doesn't answer the question.

That's perfect, thanks. I wasn't sure how thoroughly I had to clean it for fear of leaving product and having it harden. I too cleaned well first so it wasn't dirty.

Thanks again.

i just tried this on my dad's lincoln this weekend. anyone notice the plastic this was applied to having a softer feel? i swear the dash, door panels and steering wheel has a more softer feel. very comfortable. it didn't add any noticeable shine but the color of the plastic surfaces seem to have more depth.

Absolutely, there is nothing else like it!! Read the review on the first page and you'll see mention of the feel. I really love it.

My pleasure,

You wont find any hardening. The applicator actually feels very soft as it gets that same feel to it that UIGP gives to the vehicle surfaces.

All joking aside it's a great product even if you use it with the wrong side of the applicator or use to much . My Vette is gone but my UIGP lives on .

Hi Corey,

I'm very interested in this particular product for my 2005 Acura TL seats. I don't know if you have heard people talk about the leather in acuras and hondas, but it just seems to get tacky and sticky feeling with age. It's like something is leaching out of the leather and making it sticky. My armrest is particularly bad. My arm practically sticks to it like glue! And I have not spilled anything on it, it just feels that way.

So, I was wondering in your opinion of UIGP, would this help my seats and the armrest to feel less tacky and sticky? Or am I just going to have to live with it? I have cleaned the leather with Sonus leather cleaner, and then applied the Sonus leather conditioner, but the sticky feeling never goes away. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!

I think it would indeed change that sticky feeling for you. For at least a few weeks and maybe a month or more (depending on how much you drive and how much something like your body is rubbed against the surface) I think it would change to the soft cashmere feeling described in my review. My buddy has a vette and while it is a very different issue he used to have it turning white and powdery on the interior all the time. I guess that is common in vettes of a certain timeframe. Anyway I applied UIGP to his vehicle and to this day he hasn't seen any white powdery nonsense.

Well, I can't say for sure but I'd say you've got better than a 90% chance of this working well for you. I think the only question is how long untill the sticky feeling overpowers the feeling of the UIGP and I would think the UIGP would have the upper hand long enough to make it worth your while.

I hope you try it and if so PLEASE let us know how it goes.

Thank you,
Corey

Corey,
Just curious based on a couple of things that you and others have said about UIGP.
1) You mentioned above about your buddy's Vette that has the interior turn white and powdery. My wife's car seems to do the same (only on steering wheel and top of driver's door that I have noticed). I bought some UIGP a few weeks ago and did her car about 2 weeks ago. Neither area seemed to be rid of the white powdery areas, although I think the steering wheel looks better than it did. Did you first clean th areas real well, then apply UIGP? I wiped the areas down with PB's APC at 25:1 (real weak since she has leather all over the place in her Subaru) and then applied. I might try using the vinyl and leather scrub brush I purchased at the beginning of the summer to see if I can get it real clean and then reapply UIGP. Any thoughts?

2) As noted, UIGP doesn't really impart any shine or additional look to the dressed interior after it dried. Since this is the case, how do you know when you should reapply? In my car I currently have DP Interior Protectant on everything, and I can tell some areas are losing protection as the shine has dulled down some. Just trying to figure this out since the wife's UIGP'ed interior just looks "clean", but not necessarily "dressed" after the UIGP application.

So far, I really like the UIGP and hope it makes maintaining the interior much easier, particularly on the wife's car that sees more abuse...

Thanks,
Neil

Neil, I cleaned my buddy's vette with Ultima Interior Shampoo Gel. I would think your PB apc should have been fine as well but that does sound pretty weak... I've never used it so not sure. Were you sure to get your towel into the texture of the material? Did it take the white off the ridges but leave it in the valleys? Do some experimenting on a test area and see if you can get rid of the white and then if your successful carry that over to the rest of the vehicle I'm not sure if your white powdery is the same as mine but hopefully that helps.

You can actually feel the coating UIGP leaves behind. It's just a soft feel that you don't find with anything else but even after that fades from friction or time you can still see the protection if you spray water on it. It will bead up like a sealant with tighter beads than if it wasn't there.
If your vehicle is garaged and well cared for you could go 3 months without re-applying. If it gets a lot of abuse, etc then you might go once a month but really that wouldn't be necessary. On my Sky I just have it on a schedule and apply every 2 months give or take a few weeks just so I always have that feel but the protection is definitely there longer than that on my sky as it gets little traffic.

Corey,
Thanks for the reply. It is a weak solution, but I made it intentionally so as I wanted to be sure to not harm the leather on her seats, etc. I have stronger dilutions, but mostly her interior is surface grime, not ground in stains, so I try to light on the cleaner (least aggressive method). I did not work it in very well, it appeared to be gone after wiping down and applying UIGP. When the UIGP dried, it was back! If it isn't raining all weekend (again....), I am going to try the brush and work it in a little better, and then maybe step up to a stronger dilution if that doesn't work (maybe 10:1).

I am not in her car much, so I will have to feel the interior. I do remember the cashmere like feeling though after I applied it. I am sure she will look at me funny when I start fondling the interior of her car (just like she gave a weird look when she misunderstood me about my Brinkman "Squirrel finder" light I bought!).

Unfortunately, neither car is garaged at all. The abuse is usually crumbs and the occasional sticky candy (although that has stopped after the last stern talking to when I had to clean up a decent mess in the cupholder....). I may just put them on a 2 month schedule. I barely used much product at all IIRC, so it will be worth it for the protection and feel.

Thanks,
Neil
