what am i doing wrong

an orange and white pad was recomended
i was thinking maybe an orange and black finishing pad would be better or am i wrong

Someone with experience said orange and white right?

I honestly don't think you need to buy new pads. You said you had some Cobra 6.5" pads; although some members may prefer smaller pads you should still be able to do the job with the pads you have.

You can cut with the orange and finish with the black, or orange/white, or orange/white/black. I've never used HD Adapt, and of course you have to work out what's going to work on your car.

IMO on that white car you should be pretty happy after the orange, if Adapt is as good as people seem to think.

here are some pics
the hood came out the best and i buffed the longest on it with pro polish and white pad
the trunk looks the worst and it almost looks like it could be from spreading the pro polish with the pad

What polish and pad combo was you using ?

Also it might not be that your pad polish combo, the first thing you need ?

GET AN INSPECTION LIGHT RIGHT AWAY.

You can not get great results without an inspection light. Working the pad and polish and not inspecting afterwards is guessing.

Your assuming the defects are gone.

You inspect the area you worked with the light and determine if your satisfied if not then you make another pass.

I consider my self pretty good at polishing and understand what it takes, however without the proper lighting or inspection light to see what you have or haven't taken out. Your going to get dissapointing results like you have experienced.

Also how long did you work on your car for? If it took you a long time, like 7+ hours then your polish Pad combo isn't good.

If you planned on 80% + defect removal and only worked for 2-5 hours that's very very unlikely, to happend

why did i get these swirl marks using a white pad and poorboys professional polish
this leads me to beleive the pads are no good

im definitly getting a inspection light didnt even know there was such a thing i tried using some shop flood lights before

Those swirl marks in the pictures you posted are not from the the pads or improper polishing, they are from years of improper washing etc.

can you put scratch marks by spreading the polish in with a pad without the buffer on

Like the gentlemen above said, those swirl marks are not from your polishing process, those were there from improper washing, and drying technique.

So don't think you installed those they were there and you never removed them with the polishing step.

If your a begginer its going to be very difficult for you to achieve 90% defect removal your goal should be 40-50% and then learn and practice.

^^^^^^ :iagree:

And that is why I recommended Adapt, because you can get differing levels of correction with one product and different pads combinations.

It is very user friendly as it has a wide operating range as far as working time goes, ease of removal and results.

You need to do some hard research my friend. You don't use 3/4 a bottle of polish on 2 panels. The fellas here are trying to steer you in the right direction but you seem to be repeating yourself often. Polishing is a very time consuming process so break it down to a couple panels a day and perfect your craft. If pads are confusing you call autogeek customer service tell them what size backing plate you have which you said was a 5. They will be happy to make sure you get the right pad and polish combination. Pull up so,e you tube videos junkman has a nice novice video for machine polishing.

I was watching junkmans videos and he used a compound with orange pad and it left the paint dull
he said to follow up with a polish

will this hd adapt leave my paint dull after the white pad?

To make life simpler for you, go to your local auto parts store and pick up some Meguiar's ultimate compound and ultimate polish. They are made to be user friendly and a good place to start. You can use whatever sealant or wax you choose.

I would also recommend these pads and backing plate.

Meguiars 5 Inch DA Foam Discs 6 Pack

Meguiars Soft Buff DBP5 DA Polisher 5 inch Backing Plate

The next bit of advice is to practice, practice, practice. Understanding the technique is important.

Those defects are from years of neglect and not the product and pad combination you are using.

It's going to take a lot of work to remove them.

I would not hesitate to start with ultimate compound on a cutting pad seeing as those defects are severe.

Good luck.

Damn i just seen the pics and yea you need something strong like m105 or meguiars ultimate compound.

I think I got my technique better
just made some passes with the hd adapt
I made about 5 passes
one with the white pad
the rest with the orange and more pressure

here are the BEFORE

the rest with the orange
and I lost track in between most of the pics but there in order

Looks like a great job, thanks to AGO for helping this guy out
