What did you do today non-detailing related?

The rose section of the nursery is absolutely stunning at the moment, the additional rainfall this spring has allowed them to develop lovely full flower buds.

These Pierre De Ronsard roses are a highlight at the moment. This variety is commonly grown as a climber, but this example is a weeping standard. I have also seen Pierre De Ronsard kept pruned as a shrub rose.

In addition to pink, there is also a blushed white variety called 'Blushing Pierre' and a red version called 'Red Pierre'. All three varieties feature a similar bloom structure and overall growth habit, I prefer the red and pink versions though.

That added rainfall, now teamed with warmth, means there is an added challenge - blackspot. Fungal problems thrive in humidity, blackspot is no different. This situation is not helped by our overhead watering system and the sheer volume of rose stock we have this year, limiting airflow. Even with weekly sprays with both Mancozeb and Triforine, the blackspot is still developing. It can be hard to explain that to a customer, that blackspot and roses go hand in hand, even with the best practice treatments.

If you are also battling blackspot on roses, here are a couple of things to consider trying -

-Maintain airflow by pruning out inward pointing shoots. This helps keep the middle of the bush open and improves airflow.

-Avoid overhead watering, directing water to the root system rather than over the foliage.

-Thin out your mulch a little around the base of the plants. Mulch is great, but it can also increase humidity.

-Remove fallen blackspot affected foliage as best as you can. This will limit the spores being released back onto the rest of the plant. It's also a good idea to put this material in the bin rather than the compost to avoid spreading the spores around the garden.

-Regularly use an appropriate fungicide. Triforine is the best, but Mancozeb can be added into the rotation as well. There are also homemade remedies, but their effectiveness is limited. You can also get combined insecticide/fungicide products for roses, but I prefer to treat blackspot with a dedicated fungicide for a more focused effect. Both Triforine and Mancozeb are systemic, meaning they have a residual effect for 10 - 14 days.

Lawnmower maintenance before putting it away for the season. Changed oil, spark plug, air filter. Checked flywheel brake thickness. Cleaned the mower. Will apply some Sonus Motor Kote tomorrow.

Great picture! What did it feel like to be on the menu?

Thanks! Meh, the Cheetah was a pussycat - gave us some purrrrs and a few meows as he walked by.

Now, Victor, this Jaguar I met two years ago... he paced around his enclosure and never took his eyes off of me. :help:

What about treating the fuel?

Or did you drain the tank and carb bowl?

Honda carbs are notorious for being finicky with bad/stale gas.

Lawnmower/Snowblower gas always has stabil in it. I do need to top it off. I would have liked to put ethanol-free gas in it but my girlfriend went out and got regular gas. It's a 2014 and it's been starting right up the past few years. That wasn't the case when she first bought it and did not know to treat the fuel.

Stabil 360 is some good stuff. With a 4-stroke, I would be relatively confidant in its protection over the winter with 90+ octane.

If it were me? I would run the mower on the treated ethanol gas, then drain the tank and carb bowl.

JMO......

Re: Installed some Conti DWS06's on the RedSport

I think I aged a decade changing the 20 year old Denso spark plugs out of the V6 Discord. I have never in my years of wrenching had plugs fight me like that before. Being a winter beater I was like "screw it, send it" and committed to it. Two hours later I had six plugs changed. I felt one was stripped, and two more tightened up about 1/3 of the way out and got tight in both directions. That's when I said a prayer. Thankfully it was a success and none of them snapped on me. The new NGKs tightened up nicely. This car is running significantly better since giving it some TLC. The previous owner just did things that made no sense to me. Performed an OEM timing belt job($1100) but never did the plugs or trans service, judging by the stalactites of metal fines I found on the plug magnet. Trans loved some fresh ATF. The slight shudder I had going into 3rd is gone. Next checkpoint, spring. The car has 117k on it as of yesterday and being a Honda I feel the powertrain shouldn't give me issues. I don't know Hondas though so trusting the countless rumors I hear of them being excellent reliable cars.

I constantly run a mix of rec gas with Seafoam so I never worry about fuel during storage. Two pulls the mower will start in the spring, bet money on it. That has been the case in it's 15~ year life up to this point anyways.

put out Rudolf and the Bumble...good timing as it's snowing like crazy

Sounds good. I'll leave the shed unlocked. Just lock up when you're done.
