What do you use to completely strip your paint prior to LSP application?

Whats the difference between their paint prep and their pre wax?

Mark, do you prefer using a stripping shampoo or an actual product designed for the sole purpose like Griot's or I think it's called Eraser?

I use Chem Guys Citrus Wash N Gloss at a high dilution (1 oz to 1 gallon). To me, it is very cheap and effective. At the same time, dawn would work too, but I guess I would rather use a car shampoo than a hand soap if I can avoid it.

On an off subject is it possible to use chemical guys citrus wash and gloss at 1 oz per 5 gallons of water for a weekly maintenance wash without stripping your wax or sealent, some say yes and some say no?

Can't say for others, but I say yes, you're fine to do so :xyxthumbs:

Any soap or shampoo will remove a minuscule amount of lsp when used, not to mention the motion of wiping across your paint removes a little more, so no matter what you are removing a little. However, you would be very hard pressed to notice ANY change, as the amount removed is literally very very little. I have not personally found the 1 oz to 5 gallon ration of CG CWAG to have any ill effects to LSP :)

Outside of 'The Coatings', intrinsically :

I realize that some car care products' manufacturers will tell you that you must strip the paint
of any polishes, waxes, etc... prior to applying what is usually a synthetic protectant/LSP...
Regardless...I don't.

RE:The 'Coatings'-LSP's

-The ones, so far, that holds any interest for me:
1. Opti-Gard/Opti-Coat 2.0
a.) No need to "strip", if using Optimum's products...id est: polishes

2. Meguiar's M188
a.) Following Meguiar's recommended directions for its pre-application paint prep process is advised.
b.) If these directions say: Strip...Then I'll strip...The painted panels' surfaces, that is.

Hi Bob,

Out of curiosity, what's involved in Meg's pre-application paint prep?

Guaranteed LSP removal: Chemical Guys Clear Daily Car Wash - in foam gun at 2oz per 32oz water. This is perfect with Gilmour foam gun but will not strip on its own so you must follow the foam gun with a regular wash in a 2 gal. bucket using 4oz of the Clear shampoo; clay (nothing drastic, just a mild clay such as Griot with Speed Shine lube will suffice but do it even if the car is new); most important step is polish with P21s PaintWork Cleanser.

Now the car is absolutely stripped and ready for one of the two best LSP protections in the universe (considering looks, longevity, ease of use and application): Collinite 845 x 2 or Duragloss 601/111 combo - choice is yours as to wax or sealant. Results are almost the same in regards to looks and durability.

Since both LSPs are virtually the same (except in chemistry) you might ask why even make a distinction between them? The reason is that the "toppers" used between washes should compliment the LSP. For example, if you choose the sealant (such as Duragloss), you are better served by using FCS for a QD and AW for the topper. They will actually bond with their LSP. If you use a wax such as 845 (actually performs like a hybrid), you can use a true spray wax after each wash as a booster or topper.

Bottom line is follow the steps above to remove LSP and from there you can go anywhere your heart desires.

Hi Mark...

-As of now, M188 is specifically made for vehicle owners residing in the Asian market.
Here's the recommended M188 prep-steps for said vehicles in that region of the World:

Suggestions of use:
1. Wash the car to remove dirt.

2. Decontaminate the surface with the clay bar Mild or Agressive

3. Polishing with Ultra M105 Cut Compound if necessary.

4. To enhance the depth and shine, Polish with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish.

5. Although the car was clean then you should use a micorfibre cloth
and a 15% solution of isopropyl alcohol to eliminate polishing oils.
(To me: This step seems similar to some other Coatings)

6. Protect with Deep Crystal Coating

-As soon as I get my hands on some M188, I'll let you know if the above
Asian-directions are compatible with vehicles in our region of the World

Hey Mark,

Because of your post, I bought the original version of Griot's Paint Prep on BOGO. I think it does a dandy job at removing everything and I have plenty left. :props:

Ditto here....Price was right :iagree:

Mark should get an award for pushing the paint preps off the shelves lol got everybody to buy one.

LOL!

I wish I got some type of kick back! :D
Sorry Mark...Can't help you there. But:

Buy-up some of Walgreen's and Ace Hardware's stock...
That's where many detailers buy, respectively, their IPA...
and Mineral Spirits/Kleen-Strip.

:poke:
