What nationality are you?

I saw a slogan on a guys car that said "Proud to be an American" and I thought "What the ---- does that mean?"

I'm fully Irish, and when I was a kid I would go to the St Patrick's Day parade and they sold a button that said "Proud to be Irish", but I knew that on Columbus day they sold the same button only it said "Proud to be Italian", then came Black Pride, and Puerto Rican Pride. And I could never understand national or ethnic pride, because to me Pride should be reserved for something you achieve on your own.

Being Irish isn't a skill, it's a ------- genetic accident.

You wouldn't be proud to be 5'11". You wouldn't be proud to have a pre-disposition for colon cancer.

People fight to become American Citizens, even for a Green Card, and yet when they get here the say they are African American, Latinos, or Asian Americans,

The Rich, often tell stories of when they were poor, so I guess we all look back at the good in the old times, and yet we forget the bad, and the real reason many became an American.

I hope we are all better off...

I dont wanna get into any debates or too philosophical or anything but....Being a vet I understand the idea of national pride, but I've seen a lot of "who cares we're all Americans" on this thread, and I agree 100%. But i ask. Why does that stop at Americans? How about humans? I dont have anymore love for Americans than I do for the Japanese, Hiatians, Brits et al.

Someone mentioned "the generation of greed" I think that's a great point, and somewhat true...but does "pride one one's nation" not do the same thing? Convince us we're better than anyone that's NOT American?

Iraq made me appreciate some things, and one of those was that people are people no matter their country of origin. They're just as important to me as my fellow citizens. If I can fight in a war like Iraq, why not to actually help someone from another country?

Am I proud to be an American? Eh...i dont know, it's not really something I earned, but yes I love my countrymen. More importantly, im proud to be HUMAN. Boarders, races, ethnicities, sports teams.....all they do is cause war and animosity. After all, look at Cleveland since LeBron left, lol. ^_^

Okee im done. Dont ban me.

My opinion: There is absolutely no doubt that being from one place does not make you any better then being from another. I don't think having pride in one thing has anything to do with not having equal respect and love for another. If some feel both pride in themselves and disdain for others then that is a whole different and sad thing all together.
In this day and age when a portion of our culture has been infiltrated with those who would have us hate our country I'm always happy to see people stand up and say they are proud. To me this means they remember all the good the country has done and does do in the midst of the constant criticism for the bad. We see war on the tv all the time. I won't get into my defence of that but do a little research and you will find the US is putting more time, people, and money into helping people in other countries then any other country in the world.... by far!
It's not just private organizations, or churches, or the Peace corp. either. The US military has troops in Ethiopia and many other nations building schools, sanitizing water, and building friendships.
When crap hit the fan in Serbia and muslims were being killed... the US helped them. Was it for oil or gold? Not that I'm aware of.

Sorry, my response was supposed to be two sentences. Back to the topic

:hijacked: - Sorry

When I was younger I never acknowledged my ethnicity, and never thought twice about the little things my family different then all my friends. Until I got older I realized the little difference in my family were called heritage, tradition, and history. Now I don't understand a lick of Spanish or how to make a tamale, but now I desire to learn the knowledge of my culture. I'm American...I'm patriotic...It hit a big nerve when 911 occurred, I was angry/furious, I felt violated..This is OUR country I have a nephew that just got back from afghanistan last month, OUR country!
Getting to know where we came from and who we are is human and for some people it brings joy and others it brings pain.
Hope this helps with a little insight.

Just wondering.....how does this question on nationality and the related responses have anything to do with Detailing?

Note: I realize this post is probably considered part of the "Off-Topic" category of this forum. But (and I sincerely hope that I don't come across as being too off-icious), I consider it "off-ensive"; "off-color"; "off-putting"; "off-the-wall"; feel personally it should'nt be part of this forum's "off-ing"; and that if one is an "off-shoot" of a family that should have been left "off-shore", that they raise their "off-spring" in a manner that will "off-set" the "off-erings" of the above mentioned post.

If you feel like off-iciating my article of inquiry......DON'T LET THE POWERS THAT BE TAKE ME "OFF-LINE"!!!
