What really grinds your gears

Hehe I think some of the other guys hadn't seen Kyle's thread...

My stereotype drivers, and I've pointed them out to my family and friends who now reluctantly agree:

Arseholiest drivers: BMW and Honda Civic drivers.
Worst drivers, by a wiiiiide margin: Volvo drivers.
Most blatant scofflaws: women in minivans and SUVs in residential areas.
Most dangerous overall: young guys in beater pickups.

I use to. LOL But I find that stereotype odd. I usually find that people driving crappier cars drive worse. Prius, Camry, mini vans, leafs, etc.

LOL I am going to have to stick to my guns here and say that in most freeway situations, my blinker does you no good. For one thing I am going faster than you. The second thing is I am paying attention to more than what's right in front of me.

I can without a doubt swear on my Rupes life that if you and I were on the same road together my driving would have zero affect on you. And even better, if you made a mistake and cut into my lane a little close to me but going faster, I wouldn't care at all. As long as you don't make me hit the brakes you can do whatever you want around me. :props:

Those drivers around me tend to act like they own the road....
But there are other bad drivers as well.... The slow drivers (you know who you are Honda-nation), the Prius drivers who ride in the left lane, yet won't go over 55?????
:bash:

But back to turn signals.... I'd rather have someone use their signal, then pull in front of me and cause me to hit the brakes, then to just pull in front of me. At least I had some warning that they were coming over, even if they shouldn't have.

Not using a turn signal pisses me off, so it would affect me if we were on the same highway.

I promise you though, you would never have to hit your brakes if I pulled in front of you

Not saying you are slow... I'm saying I drive fast.

FYI: this is a great back and forth debate folks :dblthumb2:

Here's a question for you gear heads. The original post what grinds your gears? I'm a pretty good driver but don't know much about maintenance. I once shifted my brother's old prelude without using the clutch. I was only able to do that once. Why is a trucks tranny set up so that I never have to use the clutch except obviously from a stop

Sloppy synchronization or worn gears. You can shift a stick without engaging the clutch if everything is spinning at the perfect speed and things (gears) mesh/engage perfectly.

If everything is sort of worn, or its a truck (higher tolerances compared to sports car) it becomes easier to find this sweet spot.

When transmissions first came about, like a zillion years ago - there was no clutch. It was up to the driver's skill to shift. Then came clutches, and later synchronizers - to make it easier.

Calling me slow? :p Actually I pretty much go the speed limit whether I'm in a 100 or 500 hp car. Except on the PA and NJ Tpke. Going the speed limit makes you the "20 under" guy.

Once on the PA Tpke I had to deliver a Porsche to a customer and I met her at a rest stop. We came from opposite directions so we were parked on opposite sides. Anyway, on the way back, it was one expensive toll for me because it looked like a made a u-turn. So I guess having to go north to go south grinds my gears.

You are a wealth of information :dblthumb2:

Lol no.... But I swear every time I'm behind someone driving slower than slow, it's a Honda!

FYI- slowest driver EVER is this troll-looking lady in a Chevy HHR. She drives 10 UNDER the speed limit consistently. I cringe if I see her

It is annoying when someone passes my truck then slows down. Or they're in the fast lane in front of me and they're afraid to pass a truck then finally get over and speed up. Then it takes me 20 minutes to get back up to speed.

Or when I'm in my car they come up in the fast lane and then sit beside me. CRUISE CONTROL PEOPLE. .. CRUISE CONTROL. One of these days I'm gonna put a sign on my vehicle that says use your f'n cruise control and leave it alone. Most of you don't have to deal with this but we have alot of tunnels in pgh and the signs say maintain your speed. . CRUISE CONTROL

Maybe everyone should drive an Infiniti:

thats freaking awesome!!:)

Yeah, letting a car drive for you is weird. Infiniti is the only one that doesn't require you touch the steering wheel for it to be active. Now with even a $25,000 Subaru, all you need to do is steer. Just set the cruise and Eyesight will do everything else. Great for stop and go traffic too.

when you hold the door for someone and not a mention of thank you or appreciation. ungrateful people...

Did you notice it was in Germany? Self-driving cars are much closer to reality in western Germany and France than anywhere else for a variety of reasons. First, the level of driver education and testing is much higher than here. Second, road vehicles in general are also kept at a significantly higher standard through required maintenance and inspection (similar to JDM cars). Third, the roads are better engineered, built and maintained overall. Fourth, road marking and signage standards are much more strict.

The Infinti in that clip was just essentially set on cruise control and it used adaptive cruise and lane keeping to "drive" the car; Mercedes was the pioneer in developing and offering these features (as usual) with the 2005 W221 S-class. It used cameras and sensors to "read" road markings and speed limit signs -- the active speed control module is deactivated in non-EU W221s because none of our road and speed limit signs follow a uniform standard.

If you want to see a cool test, and not a foolish and dangerous stunt by an idiot on a public road, check out Mercedes engineers testing an actual, self-driving W222 S-class. They took a stock 2013 car and outfitted it with just a couple of test modules, then gave it a destination 100 km (62 miles) away and let it drive them there.

You can still get the same thing in the U.S. you just need to set the maximum speed you want the car to go.

That's pretty cool. Hopefully were not forced to sit in a self driving car in our lifetime. how boring. CMU in pgh has developed that technology. I've seen them test a hummer

Lol, you should drive in Memphis. People waiting to make a left turn before an intersection will often nose themselves out to encourage people to stop and let them through. I'm usually a nice guy and let them out if I was already coming to a stop at the red light, but it drives me batty how 99% of the drivers here don't bother with a wave or any notion of thanks if you let them out!

I like the ones out nose pointed at on coming traffic and wheels turned into oncoming traffic. That way if they get rear ended they end up in front of car coming head on at 35-50 MPH.
