Wheel Wednesday!

While I had the spare tyre off to polish the rear door, I thought I'd do a weight comparison between the AM steel and OE alloy. They do have different sized tyres, but they are the same brand.

AM steel - 17 X 8
Tyre - Yokohama G015 285-65/17 116H
Wt: 34.1kg - 75lb

OE alloy - 17 X 7.5
Tyre - Yokohama G015 LT 265-70/17 121S
Wt: 34.7kg - 76.5lb

I guess the LT tyre on the alloy must be heavier than the other tyre, despite the other tyre being wider. They have the same rolling diameter. The wider tyre definitely has better grip, and is quieter, it also looks better, but has worn out quicker. I was told to get the wider rubber I needed a wider rim, but I've since been told the 7.5" alloy would have been fine for a 285 tyre. It's not like anyone buys an FJ Cruiser for its cornering ability.

It's funny what you discover about wheel and tire package weights when you actually put them on a scale.

Last year I got a set of wheels and tires for autocross. I spent a lot of time hunting down the lightest wheels I could afford, but didn't think much about tire weight. First time I swapped the wheels, I put them on a scale only to find out both sets were roughly the same weight. The wheels were smaller and much lighter, but the 200TW tires with their track-duty sidewalls were much heavier.

Mounted and balanced these yesterday (Wednesday) at work -

For a friend of the shop’s ‘21 Shelby GT500. Wheel and tire set that cost more than I paid for my car…
He made a point to mention (more than once) that the wheels are $4k apiece. He wasn’t doing it to be flashy, he was just that concerned about them getting damaged. Apparently his normal ford dealer wouldn’t even touch them. (Shows the faith they have in their techs?)

If I had $4K carbon fiber wheels, I wouldn't trust a dealer either! I'd be sure to take them to someone with the best tire mounting equipment and someone I trusted operating it.

Few days late my favorite stock wheels of all time

Only the wheels left to do after working on the paint last week.

I wiped them over with Bowden's Orange Agent first, one spot required some steel wool and WD40 where some surface rust was showing in the gap between the rim and wheel face.

Then I went over them with Mother's Carnauba Cleaner Wax on a foam ball on my little 12V cordless drill, used to batteries to do all 4 wheels, but much easier than doing it by hand.

Next I gave the tyres a very light spray with Meg's Hyper Dressing to make them look a little darker.

Finished off by wiping the wheels over with TWHS Ceramic Wet Wax, for some added protection.

Having washed these last weekend, it's only fitting to make this week's post on the 21-inch 5-Double Spoke Black Diamond wheels on my sisters Volvo XC60 B6.

I really love the machined face set against the painted inner spokes. Cleaning wise, these wheels have a weird ledge that runs behind the spokes, which necessitates the need for a small wash mitt to get them properly clean behind the spokes and that ledge. The brake pads are also the typical euro dusty. This is basically the only car that I clean regularly that needs an iron remover wheel cleaner, which I use as a pre-treatment before contact washing with either foamed Brake Buster or soap. These Pirelli tyres are also receptive of different dressings, anything I put on them seems to look great.

First time I've tried this combo out on them. I find they're hazing up pretty quickly at the moment. In the past 6 months I've tried Collinite 845, 303 Touchless Sealant, 303 Graphene Nano Spray Coating, and Dodo Juice Iron Gloss. While they all offered protection, and ease of cleaning, the gloss doesn't last long and the haze reappears. I've had these wheels for 4 years now, and they are cheaply powder coated. I've still got Dodo Juice Blue Velvet I could try out, but I'm not going to buy a special wheel sealant just for these, and everything I've tried previously will be fine on the alloys when I switch them back on.

Tidied up the wheels on the Qashqai, they weren't bad so it was a wipe over with Ech2o, also topped up the Autoglym Instant Tyre Dressing, mainly for the passenger side. Also checked the pressures, all good. It might be time for a rotation, they haven't covered a lot of kilometres, but they've been on over a year.

Working on an older Chevy Silverado today. Chrome wheels, they’re hammered with stains.

I decided to do a tyre rotation on the Qashqai today, and of course it's an opportunity to get inside the wheels. I've never actually taken the wheels off this vehicle before, but this is its second set of tyres.

I worked on the insides first, the backs weren't bad, the fronts had more brake dust, but weirdly, all 4 had tar spray on the inside of the barrels. I used Turtle Wax Wheel and Tire cleaner first, as I said they weren't too bad and this moved the brake dust easily.

Then I broke out the Gyeon Q2M Tar to remove the tar sprays, which worked well, a bit surprised at that, I don't remember buying it, so I've probably had it on the shelf for over 5 years, I haven't used it, that I can remember, since we moved to our new home 4 years ago.

I then sprayed the wheels front and back with some 303 Touchless Sealant. And dried with a cheap MF.

I also discovered that the space saver spare only had 12.5 psi in it, it's supposed to be 60, it's never been used. The most frustrating part of today, getting all the little black plastic nut caps back on, is there a special trick to it that I'm not aware of?

I know I’m a day early but I got 3 sets of studded tires/wheels to swap out in the next week so I thought I’d get a jump on things

Summer shoes for the little blue car

It was 45 and partly sunny when I started but it clouded up and started raining while I was putting stuff away and it is snowing up above us

I still need to get a couple of coats of sealant on the wheels and dress the tires but I’ll get to those tomorrow

Those are those damn Bridgestone Turanza run flats and nothing I have tried will get them truly clean

Scrub them 4-5 times and they will still bloom brown

I’ve learned to live with it and can’t wait until they get replaced

You're not early for us, it's already Wednesday here, there won't be a wheel Wednesday for me today, we're expecting rain all day.
