Your favourite Compound?

I have only used a compound once. It was Menzerna FG400. I see no reason, as of now, to try anything new. Plus, I have a quart of it that just sits (wishing I would have bought 16oz, but I hate how for sometimes $10 more, you can get double!)

I have heard good things about Wolfgang Uber (which is Menzerna FG400 with some added stuff), Scholls compounds, and Meguiar's M100/101/105. Personally, I've never had good luck with Optimum polishes, but I have extremely soft, black paint. Optimum Finish on a grey CCS pad marred.

I think compounds and polishes that will become more popular are the Rupes brand. Every time I see people use the compound (including Mike Phillips using it in a Thursday Night Class) it finishes LSP ready (but they do the extra step just to enhance the gloss even more.) If you have their pads and machine, it may be worth going with this.

Happy detailing!

Rupes zephyr, FG400, and 105 are my favorites.

I had to reply to this even before seeing the rest of the posts. Interesting, Bob, that you mention Meg's UC...

Like others have said, M105 cuts hard and gets the job done...albeit with a lot of dusting.

I really liked 3M Perfect-It Cutting compound especially with a rotary...which if I recall was what it was designed to be used with though I'm not 100% sure on that.

However, I've also used Meg's UC and feel there are similar characteristics, such as longer working time, that compare to 3M Perfect-It compound. Meg's UC may not cut as hard as the 3M (or M105), but for once-in-a-great-while user Meg's UC is an easy to use alternative that is very capable of producing a very nice finish even without using Meg's Ultimate Polish. Meg's Ultimate Compound worked nicely for me with a rotary as well.

I use several depending on what condition the paint is it. 3m is about the best compounds you can buy but you will pay for it. I have the super duty(05954), Finesse-it II (05928) and the Machine polish (05996) between them 3 you can take out just about any defects that don't require sanding and leave a perfect finish in the end.

I also have some wizards turbo cut and is pretty cheap and does a great job as well, also a few other Car Brite compounds I haven't really got a chance to use them very much yet though.

FG 400. Love it! Great work time, no dust, wipes off easily, and if worked properly with the right pad for the paint that's being corrected, it will finish out LSP ready.

I wonder why nobody ever talks about Optimum polishes. I just tried the Hyper Compound. Is that just Compound II in a spray bottle? I found it to have rather short working time compared to M105, two passes and no signs of it on a rotary. Rather tough to clean the pads too.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO ADD A POLL TO THIS THREAD? I'd say no.[

The beauty of Optimum Compound II is that if used on the rotary there will be few, if any, issues that it cannot handle. Many posters on different forums have expressed this sentiment.
But on the flip side, OCII leaves much to be desired when using typical DA style machines, e.g the PCXP. PC7336, etc

IMO, I think the issue for many not talking about OPT is the fact that OPT has considerably shorter shelf life, coupled with mold issues from '12 before the formulas were tweeked to include mold inhibitors.

I'm not one that reaches for a compound on my test spot. I've found that OHC and OPII readily handles major swirls while cutting with a rotary. If I wasn't leaving the game, I would have already played with offerings such as FG400, M101, and others to produce true one steps.

:iagree:

I think a lot of compounds out there are designed to be used with a rotary. Sure, they may work OK with a DA. Forced rotation(3401) will do better with these compounds, but still not on par with a rotary.

I have to agree with you Mark.
Coming from a background of using AM, 3M, and eventually Megs. I am glad that there were those such as yourself that were here and were willing to express your thoughts and opinions in discussion-like posts, rather than the "this-is-the-greatest-thing-since-sliced-bread' type posts that inundate these forums.

You guys and gals were really into the "why" of a product of being better, than the "take-my word-for-it" aspect of discussion

I suppose reasonable people could debate the positions on the scale of almost any of them.

The only times that I go to other forums are when links are provided here. Optimum forums excepted.
The reason being is that those that were here before me provided in depth
pros and cons of, abilities, and non-abilities.
Nowadays the newer guys are leaps and bounds ahead of me due to their readiness to explore latest offerings, and use of the newest of the latest and greatest.

Me? I'm old school. If it takes me an extra hour or two to get the same results...so be it. I'm not in any hurry anymore. But for those of you that are for whatever reason, more power to you. At least I added a sig line to remind myself not to get left too far behind :)

Scholl polishes are being recommended more and more everywhere but they are very expensive. Their compound S3 Gold costs $25 for an 8 OZ bottle. A similar quantity of Optimum Compound II would cost about $11. I wonder if something twice the price delivers twice as well on performance. Even Menzerna seems to be very expensive.
