Detailing a beater! - 1972 Buick Riviera Boattail - Review: Lake Country Force Hybrid Foam Pads

I work on new cars, old cars, customs, classis, muscle cars, streetrods, exotics and daily drivers... but my favorite type of cars to buff out are beaters! You know, cars that for the most part have been given up on and are dilapidated and a lot of the time, one gas tank away from the salvage yard.

This is a true barn find
I was discovered in a barn and put up for sale on eBay and long story short it found it's way here at Autogeek and my natural reaction after looking at it was to wash it and buff it out.

Here's what storing a car in a barn for around 20 years can do to the paint...

Yes... that's called texture

And this is called rust

Review: Lake Country Force Hybrid Foam Pads

Our good friends and sponsor of our TV show Competition Ready just introduced these new pads primarily for the FLEX 3401 and rotary buffers.

Since I was going to buff out this car anyway I decided to test out the more aggressive pads in this new line including the first three pads on the left hand side,

Force Hybrid Blue Wool Pad, Force Hybrid Grey Pad and Force Hybrid Orange Pad

The_BEAST.JPG

Here's my review

The grey cutting pad is stiff. Like really stiff and hard. The foam is sharp and it's a fast cutting pad. For this type of buffing, that is using a one-step cleaner/wax it was too stiff to work the rough, textured paint.

The blue wool pad is fluffy. I think this pad would work well for neglected clearcoat paints but on this old rough single stage paint it was cutting it well but not leaving the gloss I was looking for out of doing only one-step.

The orange cutting pad was perfect. This pad offers more flexibility than the grey pad and more stiffness than the wool pad and it felt good churning and turning the HD Speed over this severely neglected paint.

More pads are better
I only had a single sample of each pad so after buffing out the front clip using the three new Force Hybrid pads I then switched over to the normal 6.5" Hybrid Blue Foam Cutting pads to finish the car. In a lot of my posts you see me recommending that when doing any compounding, polishing or when using one-step cleaner/waxes, to use lots of pads. The reason why is because when using foam pads, the foam will become wet with product and when this happens performance falls off. So you get better results and can work faster by switching to a fresh pad often. For this car I used 9 pads altogether.

And here's the results using only a one-step cleaner/wax and then punishing the FLEX 3401 aka the BEAST!

Yeah... it's not perfect but it's the best it's ever going to get. See my article here,

"Taking your car's paint to it's maximum potential"

The new pads?

They're great. When you finally wear out your normal pads you turn and churn on the FLEX 3401 or a rotary buffer, switch over to these.

Beater? You're killing me Mike! LOL...

Great car! The '71-'73 Boattail Riv's are truly "love 'em or hate 'em" cars. Not a lot of gray area with this body style as far as how people feel about them. My first Riv was a '73 GS. I love the boattails and it's great to see an original car like this one preserved. Make sure the owner joins the Riviera Owners Association!

Not too shabby Mike! Looks pretty good for what it was.

The color is interesting. In person it looks like a Jolly Rancher Sour Apple

I'll share the link to this thread with the owner.

Thanks, I agree. Especially when besides washing the heck out of her the only other thing I did was go around it ONE TIME with the BEAST, some primarily foam pads and an AIO

The pictures of the car make it look darker than it looks in person, it's actually a brighter green, looks like a candy green.

I agree. That's one of the reason I drive old Chevy trucks. Paint and chrome. No plastic.

:)

The car came out great for what it is!

What state is that car from?

Nice! A shame no interior shots.
Love the Rivs, probably a nice paint job would have this baby looking sweet again. Jeff Beck 7Up Candy would look nice, like one of his Fender Strats!

Honestly, I think I'd rather own one of these, than a lot of the plastic front wheel drive crap they're making today for $30K-$40K. Good to have some real "iron" around you.

As an old friend once told me. you don't want your Gravestone to read "He got 50 MPG".

Mike, was that ss paint? Pads didn't show much color.

Cool ride, Mike! Nice work for a one-step!
Always nice to see you bring one back from hibernation.

I, too, am a Boat-tail fan. Had a '73 back in the mid to late 70's, eventually trading it for a Corvette. Unfortunately, the bumper laws of '73 corrupted the true boattail look of your '72, but I still cherished it. Got around fairly well for such a heavy thing with a de-smogged 455, Turbo 400, true dual exhaust and police package suspension. I maintained it with Meguiar's #3,#7 and Classic Slipstream.
Scan of an old instamatic pic isn't that great, but I had to share for all the Riv fans that posted:

Nice work Mike. :props:

Cool car too, I like the lines on these, that mix of sharpness, coupled with the flowing curves . . . works for me.
Anyhow, the pads - Mike, do these Force pads align in their makeup to other Lake Country pads of the same colour? Such as LC Hybrid orange or cyan to the Force orange?

Good question Ron...

The answer is "yes". This is the original single stage paint. Back in 1972 it could have been the latest technology in lacquer back then or an enamel. It buffs or better it shines up like lacquer.

The pads I sued were mostly blue and the product, HD Speed is purple, so the green paint kind of disappears against the blue and when mixed with the purple but I have not washed the pads yet so this morning I took these pictures. The pad I'm holding in my hand is the Lake Country Force Hybrid GREY pad and so you're seeing green against grey. I did not use a white pad but had I used a white pad the green would be very apparent.

Here you go...

Yes except the grey is similar to the hard, sharp ThinPro grey foam cutting pad.

Nice pads, the hole in the center helps to prevent heat transfer from the center of the backing plate to the center and thus the rest of the velcro on the back of a pad and the pad itself.

:)

I have NOT shared a LOT of the transformation pictures I took including the washing pictures. Wait till you see this car bleed.

I haven't shown the before shots of the top and now the after pictures, but each morning and every time I have a chance I apply a fresh application of this...

This car only has 27, 843.0 miles on her...

The owner came by yesterday and gave me a thumbdrive with pictures of the car before he took possession of it. I don't have time today to go through them as I have a 1932 Ford Roadster to buff out for a new product review but next week I should have some time to go through them.

:)

I've tried the new force pads and like them all, except for the grey pad. It's WAY to stiff. Makes the user experience unpleasant with the 3401, IMO.

Car looks much better now.
