This is one of those things, where you have to look at it from Mayweathers eyes. Ortiz tried to headbutt...how can I get him back? Well, knocking him the #### out when he's not guarding himself with legal hits is a pretty damn good way to start! lol
Plain and simple...yeah, it wasn't a classy knockout. Was it legal? Sure was, which is why the ref counted. Nobody said you have to hug and kiss after someone tries to headbutt you. Ortiz got caught with his pants down, and paid for it.
I've become a MMA fan, they are the true fighters... I read somewhere Mayweather was paid almost 40 million? ridiculous!
Fussman
Pretty "class-less" finish to an overhyped fight.
MMA > boxing.
I heard about it on ESPN earlier and just watched the clip....Mayweather did it right. They were talking on ESPN how a box always has to keep his hands up. Ortiz didn't do that, and Mayweather saw it and took advantage of it.
I mean, if Ortiz thought he could head butt him, I guess that's what he gets in the end.
sorry, but thats like saying green is better than blue. its relative, some people like boxing more than mma, some like mma more than boxing. i love both, each has honorable fighters and each has its douchebags.
IMO, ortiz deserved the first left hook that mayweather hit him with, but not the second punch that knocked him out. this way ortiz did somethign dirty, so did mayweather, and now the fight continues. fans woudlve gotten their moneys worth, and there would be no excuses to who "should have" won the fight. to be honest, i think mayweather wouldve won anyways, but because of what he did now theres controversy.
yeah the rule is keep your hands up, but its about being honorable and sportsmanlike. its too bad he didnt just leave it at the left hook, then ortiz wouldve been angry and the fight wouldve gotten REALLY good.
guess well have to wait for the rematch![]()
No need to apologize. I was just stating that I prefer MMA > boxing. I realize all sports have their "honorable" and "douchebag" athletes.
I agree with you that Ortiz deserved the first punch (left) and there wouldnt have been much debate if it stopped at that. I also strongly feel Ortiz gave up and could have continued the fight. He seemed to realize he wasnt going to take the fight and was content with taking his paycheck and getting out of there.
mayweather is too experienced and skilled for ortiz. ortiz's cheap shot of a head butt was obvious since he knew he was wrong by going over to apologize a few times. he should of never let his guard completely down and if you noticed the referee was looking outside the ring and not really paying attention till he got KO'd. there's nothing really left for mayweather, both he and Pacman have proved themselves and fighting each other is all that's left...
Regardless of who you support or your opinion of class or sportsmanship, the FIRST rule of any type of combat is to protect yourself at ALL TIMES. Ortiz could have apologized for the head butt AFTER the fight was over.
