Best All Around Polishing Compound?

In my opinion, I would prefer a faster "cut" over a longer working time. If I needed to work a compound for 5 minutes plus, to achieve the desired results - chances are - I wasn't paying attention during my test spot or simply didn't do one at all & would switch to a more aggressive compound. 5 minutes is a long time to be compounding a single section, my guess would be the paint was to far gone.

It was wrong to look at it as just pure amount of working time. A better way to look at it is a polish that has adequate working time in every circumstance.

I would say my second criteria and probably equal to the above would be one that starts off very aggressive but diminishes to very fine.

IMO:
That's almost like asking how many
weeks are there in a light year...

Bob.... brutha'..... as I was contemplating something along the lines of "like exactly what color blue is the sky, and which one is your favorite", or "what is your favorite bite of pie, from your favorite piece of pie"... you hit me with your reply! :props::props::props::props::props::props:

My first thought as well.

In my opinion long working time is the top attribute for a polishing compound.

What would be your top choices under that criteria? Probably helpful if you estimate the working time.

I've seen videos that considered 1 minute a fairly long working time but I have seen other videos with a 5 minute working time and it looked like the detailer could have gone on for 15 minutes if he wanted too.

Yeah... about that working time thing.

Noticed one reply, saying M105. Talk about SHORT WORKING TIME!!!! Wowwwzzzaaaaaa

Back to the topic however....

FG400 everyone needs in their bag.

Megs D300 I'd say everyone needs to get some up close and personal time with as well. It's become my favorite SMAT compound these last 3 years by far.

The only 3D I've tried thus far is Adapt, and WILL be using more of it. Figure I'll see what Speed is about as well at some point. The comments about easy wiping, easy dusting, and working times with 3D are spot on! :dblthumb2: The lack of dusting though is where they really take the lead over everything else. Not saying the correction is any better, but lack of dusting makes it a pleasure to work with. (Again... only used Adapt so far, but expect the rest to behave in the same manner.)

What is the best all around polishing compound that can be used on 90% of all vehicles? something you can break out with any vehicle?

What machine are you using? What kind of pad?

With a d/a, there isn't much that can't be done with Ultimate Compound. One of the best products ever made on my opinion. Cuts heavy defects, and finishes very well.

On the very rare occasion I want something a touch stronger I use M100. D300 is absolutely fantastic with both foam and microfiber pads. I actually use all of the Megs SMAT products with both foam and microfiber pads.

All three of these products wipe off very easily, which is one of my favorite features. M105 can be a pain to wipe off, but I don't use it as much as I used to.

Another feature I like is that Meguiar's products allow me to go from polish to LSP, without some type of panel wipe - as long as I use a Meguiars sealant, or wax.

Polishes, I love Meguiar's Ultimate Polish, and M205. These products are awesome on a d/a. The aggression can be altered simply by increasing machine speed, pressure, or a using a more agreesive pad. Like UC, or M100 they don't require a breakdown sequence, meaning that you could very well be done finish polishing after a couple section passes, rather than going through four to six passes to ensure complete break down of diminishing abrasives. These polishes continue to impress, even after all these years.

Where do you guys feel the New McKee's 37 Fast Compound fits into this mix? I remember reading from some that it can have a longer working time if needed, and some really nice results have been posted.

I'm surprised it hasn't popped up. I've never tried it yet, so I'm interested in hearing what you're thoughts are?

Thanks a ton!

It's not the most aggressive compound you'll come across, but it's supposed to finish good. Generally speaking, it looks to be a very nice 1-step compound.

Another vote for Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0

Menzerna FG400. You can really change the level of cut/finish based upon what pad is used. You could say that about all compounds but not all compounds will finish out like FG400.

I would check out the Autopia Polish Comparison Chart.

What I would like to know without buying all those compounds is what level of aggressiveness do they diminish too.

It sounds like Menzerna FG400 is the favorite. I was extremely impressed with the video of Scholl's S3 Gold Edition that I watched on these forums recently.

From the limited numbers of posts I have been able ot find from people that have used both they seem to prefer Scholl.

One thing I love about FG400 is the consistency of the liquid after it's been spread out. UC is relatively thin, where FG400 is just thick enough. When I buff, I always want a good "flim" of product to buff on. Actually PF2500, and SF4000 also have this feature.

And yes, it does leave an awesome finish.

I recently used HD Speed All in one, with my Rupes LHR15. I was really impressed with this product. First time I have used anything from them. Went on super easy and after a few passes
buffed off as easy as any compound I have tried.

S3 Gold XXL is a superb compound. I have found it to work really well on VW/Audi hard paints where it edged FG400 in cut and gloss and dusted less.

Nailed it!

What pads have you found it to cut best with?

Scholls Spider Sandwich White or Blue, BnS Low-Pro Green, LC ThinPro Grey, GG Boss White, if I need less cut or one step LC Hybrid Orange on 3401 or LC Yellow Flat.
