So Mark Z-oh-6 sent me a small bottle of the new OPT finish polish new formula to see how it works with soft paint compared to 85RD since thats my go to stuff with my super soft mustang.
So i started out with this as the before with it polished with 85RD
85Before.jpg

I used a Crimson HT low profile pad like I do with my 85RD for the test..I primed the pad the exact same way..used the machine on speed 4.5 and did 3 passes with med pressure and 2 passes with light pressure.
Here is how the paint looked after the new OPT finish polish
Opt-Finish.jpg

It didnt finish out to well on soft paint. It is easy to work with. The consistency is much thicker then 85RD and its a blue color. Has no real smell and it wipes off very easy.

I then went back over the same section with my 85RD with 3passes on med pressure and 1 light pass

so looks like 85RD still is king for finishing out beautifully on very soft paints.

Thanks again to Mark for sending me the sample to give it a go.

Great write up! Thanks for taking the time to show us this. To bad about the poor finish of the finishing polish....

I am sure it will finish great on most cars it just doesnt finish well on super soft paint.

I have no doubt that you are correct. I just thought Optimum would make the new formula a little closer to 85rd.

with how good all their other stuff is I think they should look into making a polish for soft paints like this because I bet if they get it right it will be great.

Completely agree. If they did make such a polish it would probably end up being my go to finishing polish. Especially, if it was a spray.

Nice comparison 05xrunner. I have one question though. Did you strip the paint of oils before taking the pictures? I only ask because I know that 85rd can cover up light swirls.

Thanks!

Yep I cleaned it off. Cause when I first looked at it with my light before the pic I could see all the polishing oil left smearedaround

nice review. I have a honda accord and the clear is very soft as well. I just purchased Opt finish polish and Menz 85rd. Time to test it.

It is very tough to beat 85. Looks great after the 85... :props:I do have a question. Are the new OPT polishes water based? I am assuming they are since you used a HT pad. The other OPT polishes I have used don't seem water based but I am not really sure if they are or not. Perhaps Chris can chime in??

Hey Jon, no problem, thanks for posting the review. That 85rd is golden!

I'm surprised you haven't OC'd that super soft paint as yet...

I have thought about it but I just never committed to doing it. I like the bfwd and midnight sun combo. The car is a garage queen so it doesn't get beat up by elements

I pretty much had the same results using the new II series on black BMW. I thought it looked pretty good until I did half the hood with Blackfire polish. Which is a Menzerna product so it's probably really close to RD.

I saw this last night and I know that Optimum Finish is so refined that
it could not cause haziness on even very soft paint that you might be
working with.

I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the reason you are not getting as good a result with Optimum Finish as 85rd is that you are using Finish the same way as 85rd rather than following our directions for our product? Did Mark include them? First most people initially use too much product (which reduces the efficacy of our product) and then make sure the pad you use is a very soft finishing
pad and you should use the speed of the buffer we recommend (around
1000rpm for rotary and 3-4 for PC).

I think these are the main factors that can affect the performance of Finish. Let me know what you think. I know there is no magic potion that works great on every car...but your results are not typical when used per directions. Heck, my stomach just can't take some things and over time I've learned to stay away from them. So maybe Optimum Finish isn't the preferred product for your specific application, but before you dismiss it please try my suggestions and let me know if you see better results.

I used a Crimson Hydrotech and that is as soft as they come for those pads and I only use those pads. I did not get any directions, I primed the pad then used 2 small pea drops like all other products I have used when buffing or polishing them out. I never dismissed it for others..but I have dismissed it for my car because it just doesnt work with the super soft paint as well as the Crimson pad and 85RD

I have a blue lc pad and the crimson pad, and the blue pad is softer than the crimson. Maybe it's just me, but I was unable to finish 100% micro-mar free on soft black bmw paint with a crimson and 85rd. Ok I'm pretty sure it's just me :), but maybe the blue pad would make a difference. I have some OPT Finish new formula and a blue pad. I just need my uncle's black bmw to test this combo with. I'll report back with my results if you don't mind OP.

i only use the Lake Country HT low profile pads..so thats why i am staying with the Crimson and 85RD because its a perfect combo with my car with my Griots machine.

Hey Jon, no problem, thanks for posting the review. That 85rd is golden!

Sounds like you liked the 85RD Mark.:xyxthumbs:
How did it fair in compared to the other?

If I can add an indirect comment?
I notice that 85RD is a very good product but seems a lil oily(greasier)as opposed to OPT FinishII.After using 85RD,make sure to use a product like Eraser,GG Paint Prep,Ect..,to get your "true" finish, before applying your LSP.
