The Cure for M105's short working time and dusting issues

Does the introduction of the baby oil effect the cut of M105 at all?
 
Thanks for the effort and research! I was going to give up on M105. And you're right about it turning to cement if it's overworked. Good job!:xyxthumbs:
 
Noticed that in the 7th-8th paragraph you mention to use a mineral "spirits" wipe down....I am assuming IPA would also work?

I have not noticed any loss in cut. In fact, "hypothetically" there should be a slight increase in cut because the extended working time allows you to keep working the SMAT abrasives into the paint. At the same time, "hypothetically", after a certain point of working the compound it will start to lose its cut as the pad becomes saturated with abraded paint.

A IPA wipedown would also work but I personally like using mineral spirit wipedowns after the compounding stage to verify the defects were removed.

Question. Any step needed after mineral spirit wipe down before going on to next phase?

Nope, just go right into polishing. The wipedown is just to check your work. Even if you dont do a wipedown, its not going to harm/interfere with your next polishing step.
 
Sorry, I should have been more specific. Not having done a mineral spirit wipe down. There's no problem with mineral spirit residue?
 
I have not seen any adverse effects mineral spirits residue. I might be a bit streaky but a light buffing with a towel will take care of that. It also doesnt effect the next polishing stage either. If you are worried about residue you can use IPA, I just prefer using a stronger solvent after reading this thread a while back.

Will "Equate Baby Oil Delicate 20 Fl Oz" that includes Mineral Oil and Fragrance from wallyM work?
 
I was traveling all last week for a special project and when working with Operation Comfort and saw this thread but haven't carved out the time to reply till just now...

First, anyone that's been reading my posts since 1994 knows I always say,

"Find something that you like and use it often"


This just means, exactly what it says, so if you find adding mineral oil to your pad when using M105 then that's your business and your "system".


With that said, since starting to post how-to information to the "Internet" starting in 1994 my normal reply to any thread where people are mixing chemicals and product trying to reach a desired end-result, to follow the manufactures directions.

If the manufacture recommends adding something to the product then by all means follow their directions, if they don't then it could be there's a reason for this.

So I've sent the link to this thread to Mike Pennington, the Director of Training at Meguiar's and also to Jason Rose, the Product Manager for the Professional Line just so that they are aware of this new idea being posted as a way to improve M105 and/or Ultimate Compound.


I'm not a big fan of people mixing chemicals because in most cases it can alter the performance of a product in a negative way. That may or may not be the case in this example, I don't know, that's why I've forwarded the link to this thread to people with the ability to talk to the chemist that created the formula.


It is safe to say that at this time this is not an official recommendation from Meguiar's.

Thanks for sharing your discovery Alan. That was a LOT of product you had on the pad there! Have you tried your method with a more conventional amount of polish?

Thanks Mike.

Maybe because I only use a DA, and I generally prime my pad as advertised in the KBM, I've never found working time to be a huge problem. Clearly you can't work M105 as long as something like M205, but I have never found working time to be a huge problem, although I am always open to new suggestions.
 
As someone who was struggling with M105 I must say I was able to get the results I was looking for with adding the baby oil to my pad before M105. I didnt have any problems with this method except the pad wont last as long as it normally has if I didnt. I did notice when I would wipe there was a haze on some of the panels manly the doors, but Im not sure if it was there before.
 
I gave up on M105 a long time ago, I found a better product that doesn't have all the issues of M105. I use that product 99.9% of the time, the other .1% is D151

does this other product cut and finish like M105? and i am guessing what makes this other product "better" is longer work time and not as much dust? also is this an AG sold product?
 
I too would like to find a m105 replacement, available at AG. I like how it corrects but the dust and short working time with concrete wipeoffs, if you go too long, drive me nuts.

It cuts like M105 and finishes better than M205. Its water based and doesn't dust, any splatter is easily cleaned up with water. The product I use is System 51 Perfect Cut Cutting Polish.

I don't think AG carries it anymore.

Do you only use this polish with a rotary?
