ADS Ghost tire coating...real world durability and looks!

How's the GF liking the little VW, I saw a review on Sarah n Tuned
She likes it ALOT! I actually like driving it too and ever since it hit about 3500 miles the engine has gotten more powerful as well. Her previous car, the Chevy Cruze, with its 1.4L turbo ran noticeably better on 89 or 93 compared to 87, so we tried the same thing here and it works

Her car was dirty from driving in the rain this morning, so I washed it with Carbon Collective RW, one of the strongest RW's on the market. I pre-treated each tire/wheel and then came back with the RW sponge soaked with leftover RW solution and cleaned them, this is after cleaning/drying and then waiting to take the pic

I now wonder WHEN I'll be deep cleaning her tires and re-applying ADS Ghost

Washed w/Griot's Garage Ceramic RW this evening and hand dried. I've decided that in about 2 weeks the TAOS will be getting another detail, meaning a good, deep tire & wheel cleaning and protection, so another coat of ADS EZ Beads for the rims and tires scrubbed with ADS Tire Cleaner and OFCOARSE re-coated with ADS Ghost, 2 or 3 coats...bring on spring and summer storms, Ghost has this

I'm wondering if Ghost doesn't like heat... because my recent application of it looks terrible after a long drive. I applied two layers of it while my wife's summer wheels were still inside, and they remained inside for another week+ before I installed them on her car. Looked great at this time!

We drove from WI to FL for spring break, and by the time we got to FL (~20 hrs driving at interstate speeds), ghost turned brown. 🤮
Pretty disappointed with this and a bit worried about cleaning it off to reapply.

I had this same issue with OPT tire coating and literally threw away the bottle.

My suggestion is to email Bradley @ADS and include the photo and get his thoughts.

Just curious, how clean was the tire before application?

Yeah, I have that on my list to email him and ask.

I wish I could guarantee that the tire was perfectly clean but I cleaned the wheels last fall before I put them away. I know I really cleaned the wheels well with a wheel cleaner because I was planning on applying a ceramic coating, but I can't be certain I sufficiently scrubbed the tires. However, it would be weird to skip the tires because it's so ingrained to do that. Once dry they went straight into the basement and stacked up. I did no further cleaning before applying ghost.

Edit: I applied ghost to my winter tires (they were brand new and I did not clean them before application) and did not have this browning issue. Either it's because the tires were new or it's because I didn't put as much temp into them with a 20 hr road trip.

Looking forward to hearing what Bradley tells you, you'll hear back quickly

Thinking about it, Eldo, who lives in SoCal, applied Mr. Cartoon to 2 sets of tires already, so it'll be interesting to see if heat affects them, not the same product but tire coating nonetheless

I wonder if the browning is from something else other than heat. A tire running at a steady state even at highway speeds should not get too hot if properly inflated. It will get warmer than the vehicle sitting still, and ambient temps/surface temps will have an effect as well, but I'd still think isn't anything crazy that would "cook" a tire coating.

Back when I still ran my summer street tires I'd come off an autocross course with my tires so hot they couldn't be touched and you could see slight signs of the tread surface starting to melt but it would never brown or alter the appearance of the tire dressings I was using.

I'm curious about this because of my experience with OPT tire coating on mine as well as buddy's set of tires, turned this goldish/tan

Were you expecting to just dress them in the spring? Getting them clean enough for dressing is different than getting them clean enough for coating, plus you left them exposed to the air (no dressing) all winter.

I have had only had one set of tires that I coated that I had any browning problems with, and I scrubbed the bejeesus out of them. However they had been dressed for years with DG 253 and also were snowflake-on-the-mountain all-seasons that would brown if you looked at them sideways.

Bottom line is I don't think it has anything to do with the coating, but more with the cleaning/tires. As far as the reapplication, I think you'll be fine, just scrub them good and go over them again.

Yes- I assumed cleaning them in the Fall would be sufficient to apply dressing/sealant in Spring. Didn't think much of it since they were stored in my basement.

I had been using the TW graphene tire dressing on these tires, so maybe that's a contributor?

EDIT: do think it's worth noting that these tires have never looked brown in the ~2 years since installing them. So it's not something inherent to the tires.

Bradley tells me they were not cleaned properly and solvents are required.

I'm still baffled that they were nice and black for a whole week and a half, and then turned that brown after a single day of driving. Wild.
I did not have this experience with Mr. Cartoon sealant on old tires with less prep.

Hopefully the weather settles down one of these weekends and I can try some tar remove to remove the brown ghost and try again.

I assume you told him the whole week and a half thing, if so, that's odd. When that issue happened to me with OPT TIRE COATING years ago it basically happened overnight, was flakes and just weird. I've never thrown a product away, literally, but that one I did! Funny thing is though, my buddy in Tennessee used it had ZERO issues

Yeah, I did and even reiterated it in my response. Felt like he was a bit preoccupied with TRCMA tbh.

I did pick up some Stoner Tar & Grease remove. It's supposed to remove Ghost so I'll clean them up and give it another try and follow up here. Might be a bit though as weather is still meh.

Well I don't know about that but if so it's understandable. Like you said, do a complete and total strip of EVERYTHING there and start a new. Please keep us posted and FWIW Bradley does care about customer service

When I would put away tires seasonally I always dressed them before storage, rather than after. I don't think it's surprising that the long trip caused the browning, as the sidewall flexing is supposed to bring the anti-ozonant to the surface, which is what causes the browning.

That being said, and I appreciate that you've never had browning issues with these tires before, but I don't think this has anything to do with the coating per se, all these acrylic coatings are pretty similar. It seems to me I've had tires that have browned more when new, and others that have browned more when they got older, so maybe it was just time for these.

Hopefully a good scrub and reapplication will be all that's needed.

Of all the brands I've attempted to engage with, ADS and Bradley are the only ones to have shown any interest. To me, it seems as if Bradley is on the frontline engaging with customers, I'm sure he could just as easily farm out product enquirers and feedback. I also like that it gives the brand a "face".......................you can't say that about Carpro, Turtle Wax, Gtechniq, Mothers ect.
